32. 1931 W517 #4 Babe Ruth (HOF) - PSA VG-EX 4 MINIMUM BID: $500
34. 1939 Playball #92 Ted WIlliams (HOF RC) - PSA GOOD 2 MINIMUM BID: $750
Gorgeous example of the Babe Ruth card from the 54-card strip issue dated to 1931. The issue actually featured two Ruth cards (#4 and #20), as well as two cards of Mickey Cochrane, and the cards can be found with various ink tints, as well as smaller-sized versions. All told, this set packs quite a bit of star power, as 60% of its subjects wound up in the Hall of Fame. This example has been graded VG-EX 4 by PSA with some minor corner and edge wear being the card’s primary flaws.
Clean and well-centered example of the 1939 Playball Ted Williams card, his acknowledged rookie card. Graded GOOD 2 by PSA, the card appears far stronger than the assigned grade, with light surface wear and corner rounding the primary condition flaws. A light wrinkle is visible on the reverse, near the bottom edge. Despite the accuracy of PSA’s technical assessment, the card boasts a far stronger presentation than the assigned grade.
35. 1948 Swell Sport Thrills #3 Jackie Robinson (HOF) - PSA VG-EX 4 MINIMUM BID: $1,000
33. 1933 Goudey #154 Jimmy Foxx (HOF) - PSA EX-MT 6 MINIMUM BID: $500
Produced by the Philadelphia Gum Company (the same company that produced the Philadelphia football card sets of the 1960s), the Swell Bubble Gum “Sport Thrills” series was a 20-card set that featured a black-and-white photograph depicting a great moment in baseball history, with the story of the event explained on the back. Featuring memorable events throughout baseball history up until the immediate postwar era, few “sport thrills” are more important than the debut of Jackie Robinson, depicted here
Sharp 1933 Goudey Foxx, graded EX-MT 6 by PSA. Bright and colorful with sharp corners and an unblemished surface, the print registration is ever-so-slightly off, leading to a thickening of the lines that results in a bold image of the Athletics superstar. A slight L-R centering issue is the primary condition flaw, easily offset by the color and overall sharpness of the card.
FALL 2021 PREMIER AUCTION − CLOSES NOVEMBER 27, 2021 25 just one year after its occurrence. Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA, the card is exceptionally sharp for the grade, and even well-centered for the issue (the set is absolutely plagued with centering problems to the point of miscuts). With eye appeal befitting an EX-MT card (or, in a different time, perhaps better), the fatal flaw is a very light surface wrinkle near the top edge in the center, likely a flaw in the paper rather than a wrinkle that occurred due to wear. A tremendous card, which has rapidly escalated in value as Robinson has become more important in the hobby.
