The romance author and how to become one

A sure way to never be published in romance is to sneer at the genre. Authors who do not believe in what they’re writing can be spotted instantly by experienced editors. Romances are character-driven novels, so authors cannot make the characters act according to the plot. Standards are high, publishers’ criteria exacting, and slots for specific subgenres limited. Nowadays there are online workshops and writing tips all over the internet too, so there is no excuse for not mastering the craft and technique of writing. Joining a critique group of supportive but critical peers is also helpful. Write and write and write some more. Practice is essential and it takes at least a million words to become a competent writer. Finally, you must submit what you write. Brenda Chin of Harlequin/Silhouette, which is based in Toronto and is one of the world’s largest publishers, says, “Write me a good book.” That means one in which the protagonists fall in love in a way that seems believable and makes the reader believe, not only in the obligatory happy ending, but that thecharactersandtheirrelationshiparestrong enough to survive the rocky relationship road. OTTAWA | Valentine’s Day may be over, but the romance genre comprises the single largest market of book sales in North America. For a would-be author, romance offers opportunities to sell to actively-acquiring publishers. Romance Writers of America industry figures state romance fiction generated almost $1.4 billion in 2010, or 13.4% of the market. RWA is the only fiction association which welcomes unpublished members and which has chapters all over the world, including one in Ottawa. They provide high-powered workshops, the opportunity to learn from established authors, contests, conferences and peer support. Their topics are applicable to any commercial fiction authors and include how to submit to publishers and agents. The Ottawa chapter, Ottawa Romance Writers’ Association, has about 50 members, many of whom are published, but don’t get the idea that writing a romance is easy. Bestselling Ottawa erotic-romance author Sharon Page wrote for many years and submitted many manuscripts before her first sale to Ellora’s Cave, all while working fulltime and raising a family.
