Winter Solstice On December 21, the Winter Solstice brings the shortest day and longest night of the year. It’s when the sun dips to its lowest point in the sky as the Northern Hemisphere tilts farthest from it giving us long shadows, crisp mornings, and the official start of winter. Ancient cultures celebrated this day as the return of the light, since daylight slowly grows longer after the solstice. Traditions like Yule logs, evergreens, and candlelit gatherings all trace back to these early cele- brations. Even Stonehenge aligns perfectly with the solstice sunset.
