With more than a third (35%) of family firms saying that improved access to leadership and management development for next generation leaders would strengthen their business, it’s clear that this generation needs more targeted support to succeed. Business Support: Help to Grow The Help to Grow: Management course is a 12‑week, practical management training programme delivered by accredited business schools. It provides around 50 hours of learning and is 90% funded by the Government, with participants contributing £750. The programme is open to UK‑based SMEs with between 5 and 249 employees. However, there is a huge cohort of mid-market scale-up businesses (from 250-499 employees) that would see significant value in this area if they could support the next generation of family business leaders.
Recommendations Create Help to Grow: A School for Succession , to provide more education and support to the next generation of family business leaders. An extension of the current programme could be co- funded by family businesses, unspent Growth and Skills Levy funds, and Government. Expand the Help to Grow offer to businesses with up to 499 staff, from the current level of 249 employees, to enable more medium- sized firms to benefit.
