It is Valentine ’ s Day this month. It ’ s the day set aside to help us remember and acknowledge those who occupy a special place in our hearts. We usually do this by giving cards or flowers or small gifts. The celebration of St. Valentines Day, synonymous with love, is firmly established as one of our annual traditions. But who was St. Valentine? According to Christian tradition, Valentine was a priest, who in ancient times, continued to perform Christian marriages, in spite of the Roman authorities ’ order to cease and desist. He believed in love and marriage. Ultimately, Valentine was put to death for his faith and disobedience, and became St. Valentine. His life is a symbol of love and courage and sacrifice. Valentine ’ s legacy also points beyond that of human love and affection to the love of the God he served, a greater love that was constant and true and sacrificial. The ultimate in sacrificial love was demonstrated for us in Jesus Christ. This was penned for us by John in his gospel, “ For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever would believe in Him, would not perish but have eternal life. ” God ’ s love is unconditional, constant and redemptive. While Valentine ’ s Day celebrates love between people, it also invites us to consider the source of all love. God ’ s love is the perfect example - faithful, enduring, and freely given - calling us to love one another, as He has loved us.
