Children need their fathers throu- ghout their lives, but it’s during ado- lescence that children need their fathers most. And today. adoles- cence lasts longer than ever. The period of exploration starts earlier and often extends into the early 20s. However, it’s often when children are in the full throes of adolescence that their father hits a difficult period in his own life. The teenager’s search for his or her own identity, coupled with the father’s desire for self-fulfill- ment, can upset family relationships. Luckily, these difficult times are often followed by reconciliation. During the adolescent years, chil- dren need their fathers all the more. It is important to understand that a teen wants to develop a uni- que identity and to feel that he or she ‘belongs.’ Even if teens beco- me rebellious and distant, they still needs a father’s presence and love. Their refusal to communicate should not be taken as a declaration of your failure as a parent, but rather as a need for your affirmation.
