NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS
Foster Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP) and Faculty Engagement NSBE chapters should increase engagement with faculty and administration on campus to foster success and confidence. To this end, NSBE chapters can do the following: • If your college or university has a Minority or Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP) oce, that would be the best source for resources, tools, programs, and support to promote success. Some schools house their MEP function in Student Aairs departments, others in the College of Engineering or Diversity Oce. Regardless of where it’s located, or what it’s called, the MEP is singularly situated to make sure your members are successful. The chapter should take advantage and support it by providing tutors and workshop leaders. • Host receptions with engineering faculty and sponsor or participate in other activities to facilitate informal connections. • Provide mechanisms and incentives to encourage research with faculty on projects of interest to students, either for pay, for credit, or for the experience. • Encourage members to visit their professors and TAs at least once per week. • Make use of professor’s oce hours and never miss exam reviews. • Encourage members to reach out to key university administrators by inviting the President, Provost, Dean of Engineering, and Department Heads to GBM meetings and other chapter events. • Help members familiarize themselves with financial aid and career services oces. • Make visiting campus writing centers and tutorial services normative and not remedial, to foster high achievement, continual improvement and mastery!
