New accessible homes for Tasmania
We are committed to housing solutions that are created through a co-design process to ensure that new homes cater for participants’ personal needs and preferences and can be adapted and reconfigured to also suit people’s changing needs in the future.
Housing Choices Tasmania resident Sharon hosted the State Housing Minister Guy Barnett MP and a range of key partners in January to celebrate the launch of more homes for priority applicants, including those with mobility issues and older tenants. Developed by Housing Choices Tasmania with construction partner Oliver Kelly and funding assistance from the Tasmanian Government, the new units located in East Devonport have also freed up under-occupied larger homes for families in urgent need of accommodation.
After a decade in her previous three-bedroom property, Sharon needed a home suitable for her changing mobility needs.
Accessible features and high thermal standards in the new single level home were designed for ageing in place and have provided Sharon, who is in her 50s, with a secure, stable home for life. “It’s nice and quiet out here. At the old place, my stress levels were sky high but now it’s calmed down a lot. In my day-to-day life, I’m more outgoing, and have a more positive outlook on life. I’ve noticed that my health is a lot better since I’ve moved into here” Sharon said.
