Habilitación nuevo edificio de la Biblioteca del Congreso Nacional New building for the National Congress Library
La biblioteca, de más de 5.500 m², se instalará en el edificio Huneeus, ubicado frente al ex Congreso en calle Catedral, el cual será restaurado a partir de la propuesta presentada por los arquitectos Alejandro Beals, Loreto Lyon y Matías Zegers. The library, with over 5,500 m², will be housed in the Huneeus building located across the former Congress on Catedral Street, which will be restored following the proposal presented by architects Alejandro Beals, Loreto Lyon and Matías Zegers. El concurso, convocado por la Dirección de Arquitectura del MOP, permitirá habilitar este edificio adquirido por el Estado el año 2009. La propuesta ganadora, escogida entre 20 anteproyectos, destacó por resolver todos los requerimientos estipulados en las bases. Considera una escalera que recorre ascendente y diagonal el edificio, integrando los pisos y espacios de consulta y favoreciendo el desarrollo del trabajo legislativo, concibiendo a su vez un lugar republicano. El jurado fue presidido por James Fry, Director Nacional de Arquitectura, e integrado entre otros por Alfonso Pérez, director de la Biblioteca del Congreso; Eduardo Rivas, en representación de la Dirección de Arquitectura MOP; Patricio Gross, del Colegio de Arquitectos; y Juan Sabbagh, representando a los concursantes, entre otros. The competition, organized by the Department of Architecture of the Ministry of Public Works, will fit out the building purchased by the state in 2009. Chosen among 20 entries, the winning proposal stood out for the way it solved all the requirements of the tender rules. It features a stairway rising in diagonal to the building layout, integrating the floors and consultation spaces and encouraging the development of legislative work while at the same time creating an place with civic character. James Fry, National Architecture Director, headed the jury. Other jury members were Alfonso Pérez, director of the Library of Congress; Eduardo Rivas in representation of the Architecture Directorate of the Public Works Ministry; Patricio Gross, of the Architects Association; and Juan Sabbagh, representative of the contestants.

La habilitación del edificio Huneeus como sede de la nueva Biblioteca del Congreso Nacional, pone en evidencia la intención de la institución de posicionarse como un organismo influyente y altamente relevante a nivel nacional, tanto en el ámbito parlamentario como público. Este edificio tiene por objetivo no sólo modernizar y mejorar los servicios que presta a los parlamentarios del país, sino que apunta a convertirse en un hito urbano memorable: un espacio cívico de encuentro para la generación, difusión e intercambio de ideas, capaz de acercar a la población a su legado político y cultural mediante experiencias de aprendizaje y comunicación. The fitting out of the Huneeus building to house the new Library of National Congress, reveals the intention of the institution to position itself as an influential and highly relevant national body, both in the parliamentary and public spheres. This building not only seeks to modernize and improve the services provided to the country’s parliamentarians, but also to become a memorable city landmark: a civic meeting space for the creation, dissemination and exchange of ideas, bringing the people closer to their political and cultural heritage through experiences of learning and communication.
