Experiencia interior: biblioteca infinita El primer nivel de la biblioteca busca convertirse en una especie de ágora interior, un suelo continuo entre el interior y exterior del edificio, donde los límites no son los muros exteriores sino los edificios colindantes. Los programas que allí se yuxtaponen se comparten, se hacen públicos. El hall es compartido por todos. Desde lo alto, la escalera en espiral que recorre el vacío central se asoma sobre este espacio, dando inicio a un recorrido que asciende entre la estructura original del edificio. La exploración, la experiencia de búsqueda y hallazgo, posibilitada por la disposición de los libros al alcance de la mano es lo que define una biblioteca a 'escala humana'. La institución se percibe próxima, abierta y accesible. El nuevo atravieso público al interior del edificio es desde donde se accede a las distintas zonas de lectura, una especie de laberinto tridimensional que promueve la lentitud y la exploración. Esta galería interior se aparece infinita, reflejada en su parte baja por un pavimento pulido de basalto negro, y en su parte alta por un cielo color bronce. Estas dos materialidades cualifican al mismo tiempo su inicio y término, vinculando el cuerpo central de la biblioteca a la materialidad dura y pétrea de la calle, y cualificando la luz que refleja la cubierta hacia el interior del edificio de manera difusa y temblorosa. The interior experience: an infinite library The first level of the library wants to become an inner agora, a continuous ground surface between the interior and exterior of the building where the boundaries are not the outer walls but the surrounding buildings. Here the functional programs placed together are shared and made public: everyone uses the hall. The spiral staircase that runs through the central void overlooks this space from above, starting a journey that rises through the original structure of the building. The exploration and the experience of search and discovery made possible by the arrangement of the books at hand are what define a “human scaled” library. The institution is perceived as friendly, open and accessible. The new public crossing through the building reaches into the different areas of reading, a kind of three-dimensional maze that suggests a slow paced exploration. This interior gallery appears infinite, reflected on its bottom end by the polished black basalt pavement, and in its upper part by a bronze colored sky. These two materials also characterize the start and finish, linking the main body of the library to the hard and stony street materials on one hand, and filtering the light reflected by the roofing into the building in a diffuse and trembling manner up high.
