La Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de la Universidad de Chile invitó a sus propios arquitectos académicos a presentar propuestas. El edificio se ubicará en un terreno de la FAU situado en la esquina de Portugal y Marcoleta. The School of Architecture and Urban Planning of the University of Chile (FAU) invited its own faculty architects to submit proposals. The building will be located on a school plot on the corner of Portugal and Marcoleta streets.
The in-house project competition was meant to explore an architectural response to the functional and spatial requirements of the building’s program, the urban and environmental demands coming from its location, as well as the institutional character of the building. It also had to harmonize with the existing complex, with an outstanding heritage value. The jury was composed of the president of the University of Chile, Víctor Pérez; Leopoldo Prat, dean of the school; Humberto Eliash, vice dean; Juan Sabbagh, National Architecture Award 2002; Rodrigo Toro, Director of External Projects; Ernesto López, representative of the school council; Pablo Paredes, representative of the student body; José Antonio de Frutos, representative of the contestants and Edgardo González, representative of the school support staff. The project by architect Fernando Dowling was chosen from among the 8 submissions received. The Marcoleta Building will have classrooms, labs, a modern library and underground parking, as well as the offices of the Housing Institute (INVI), Department of Geography, External Projects Center and the FAU Foundation, in 7,000 m² of construction.
El concurso interno de anteproyectos buscó obtener una respuesta arquitectónica tanto a las necesidades funcionales y espaciales del programa del edificio, como a las exigencias urbano-ambientales propias de su emplazamiento y del carácter institucional del edificio. Además, debía armonizar con el conjunto existente, el cual cuenta con un edificio de gran valor patrimonial. El jurado lo integraron el rector de la Universidad de Chile, Víctor Pérez; el decano FAU, Leopoldo Prat Vargas; el vicedecano FAU, Humberto Eliash; el Premio Nacional de Arquitectura 2002, Juan Sabbagh; el Director de Proyectos Externos FAU, Rodrigo Toro; Ernesto López, representante del Consejo de la FAU; Pablo Paredes, representante de estudiantes FAU; José Antonio de Frutos, representante de los concursantes y Edgardo González, representante del personal de colaboración. Se presentaron ocho anteproyectos, entre los cuales se seleccionó el del arquitecto Fernando Dowling. El Edificio Marcoleta tendrá 7.000 m² y acogerá salas de clases, laboratorios, una moderna biblioteca y estacionamientos subterráneos, así como las oficinas del Instituto de la Vivienda, INVI; Departamento de Geografía, Centro de Proyectos Externos y Fundación FAU.
