De las 22 propuestas recibidas, el jurado compuesto por representantes del Consejo de la Cultura y las Artes, el Gobierno Regional, el MOP, el municipio serenense, el Colegio de Arquitectos y la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad de La Serena, escogió como ganador el proyecto desarrollado por la oficina Holmes Labbé Portugueis Spichiger. El teatro considera una superficie total de 7.000 m², dos salas para funciones, un auditorium principal con más de mil butacas y un segundo teatro con aproximadamente 300 butacas. Of the 22 proposals received, the jury formed by representatives of the Council for Culture and the Arts, the Regional Government, the Ministry of Works, the Municipality of La Serena, the Chilean Institute of Architects (Colegio de Arquitectos) and the School of Architecture at the University of La Serena, chose as the winner the project developed by the Holmes Labbé Portugueis Spichiger office. The Gabriela Mistral Theater includes a total area of 7,000 m², two performance halls, a main auditorium with over a thousand seats and a second theater with close to 300 seats.

La situación en la que se encuentra el terreno implica tres consideraciones que, a nuestro juicio, condicionan la manera de pensar el nuevo Teatro Regional de La Serena. Cada una de ellas ha sido planteada como una constricción, y todas apuntan a la construcción del espacio público y su máxima continuidad espacial. - Cornisa: el casco antiguo, abalconado por sobre la plataforma inferior de la ciudad, constituye dos situaciones espaciales particulares. Desde arriba la ciudad colonial se encuentra de golpe con su contexto geográfico, abriéndose en una línea al horizonte y su atmósfera marina. Desde abajo aparece un punto de vista poco común de ciudad, una visión lejana y de perspectivas amplias sobre una fachada continua que se monta sobre los parques. Hay que construir un borde que ponga en valor la fachada histórica de la ciudad, su relación con el contexto y sus aperturas visuales. The situation of the site involves three considerations that in our opinion affect the way to conceive the new Regional Theater of La Serena. Each of them has been presented as a constraint, and they all point to the construction of public space and maximum spatial continuity. - Cornice: the old city center overlooking the lower platform of the city, comprises two particular spatial situations. From above the colonial city is violently confronted with its geographical context, opening up parallel to the horizon and marine atmosphere. From below, a rare point of view of the city appears as a distant vision of broad perspectives, on a continuous facade which is mounted on the parks. We must build a border that appraises the historic façade of the city, its relationship to the context and visual openings.
