El desarrollo del Teatro Regional de la Serena se concibe como una oportunidad única de consolidar un edificio "abierto a la ciudad", dignificando un lugar que por vocación, desde su historia, ha sido centro de manifestaciones artísticas y masivas. Su emplazamiento en el sector céntrico de la ciudad lo ubica como parte de un circuito cultural turístico, que por su dinámica de funcionamiento y congregación se conforma como: encuentro, manifestación, espectáculo, pausa (plaza, esquina café y teatro). La concepción arquitectónica del edificio reconoce la realidad del lugar, la de ser un "atravieso" entre la ciudad alta (centro) y la ciudad baja (plan costero), esta última hoy consolidada como polo de servicios, comercio y turismo. La proporción del sitio (70 m x 132 m) permite tensionar la calle y desde ella ordenar el programa entorno a recintos "dinámicos" y "estáticos", según su uso. Los primeros tienen como centro el Gran Patio Solemne y la calle pública, desde los cuales se congrega, encuentra y recorre el edificio. Los estáticos representan el programa de mayor magnitud referido a las Salas de Teatro. The development of the Regional Theater of La Serena presents the unique opportunity to consolidate a building that is “open to the city”, dignifying a place that has the historical vocation of being a center for mass artistic manifestations. The location in the city center makes it part of a cultural tour circuit which, due to its functional and assembly dynamics, conform as meeting, manifestation, show, pause (square, corner, coffee and theater). The architectural conception of the building assumes the condition of the place as a “crossing” from the high city (center) and the low city (coastal plan) which today is consolidated as a service, commerce and tourism center. The proportions of the site (70 m by 132 m) create a tension towards the street, and from it an order that distributes the program into “dynamic” and “static” premises according to use. The first are centered on the Great Solemn Court and the public street which allow for assembly, meeting and circulating through the building. The static premises represent the larger program comprising the Theater Halls.
