La luz El diseño buscó abrirse a la luz natural, generando grandes ventanales en los espacios públicos y ventanales superiores para bañar de luz a los privados. El espacio interior central del establecimiento es el Patio Cubierto, lugar de encuentro y articulador de las circulaciones a los distintos pabellones y a su vez contenedor de la rampa comunicadora entre los dos niveles educativos con el subterráneo, en que se emplaza el auditorio. Este espacio central exacerba las formas, confluyendo en él un caos de pilares estructurantes de la rampa en primer plano, y en segundo plano el ventanal de doble altura, que posee una composición desordenada y pigmentada en clara alusión a las construcciones y colores utilizados por los selknam. A su vez todo se baña de luz por medio de la perforación del cielo, posibilitado por un gran tragaluz dispuesto a lo largo de todo el desarrollo de la rampa. Los contrastes en las diferentes horas del día van marcando los tiempos y posibilitando sensaciones. Materialidad El edificio se ejecuta completamente en hormigón armado, con una fachada ventilada en base a un entablado de fibrocemento, con la finalidad de aislar el edificio de las bajas temperaturas exteriores. Al margen de la materialidad estructural, se trabajó con madera laminada para los ventanales principales. Los pavimentos son principalmente radieres afinados a helicóptero y sellados. Los cielos de las circulaciones se diseñaron en base a un entramado de lenga. Debido a las bajas temperaturas imperantes en Tierra del Fuego, el edificio contempla aislación exterior por medio de fachada ventilada, ventanales termopanel y radier y losa radiante.
Natural Light The design opens up to natural light by means of large windows in public spaces and high windows that bathe the private ones. The main inner space of the school is the covered courtyard, a meeting place and articulator of the circulations to the different pavilions and at the same time holding the connecting ramp between the two educative levels and the basement, which contains the auditorium. This central space enhances the shapes, presenting in the foreground the chaos of columns that support the ramp, and in the back the double height windows with a colored and disordered composition in clear reference to the constructions and colors of the Selknam. At the same time natural light bathes the whole area from a skylight placed over the whole path of the ramp. The contrasts in lighting during the course of the day mark the time and create different sensations. Materials The school is completely built in reinforced concrete with a ventilated façade composed of fiber cement planking in order to isolate the building from the low exterior temperatures. Besides the structural materials, laminated wood was used in the main windows. Paving finishes are mainly sealed leveled cement. The ceilings over circulation areas are based on a lenga wood grid. Due to the low temperatures of Tierra del Fuego, the building has exterior isolation by means of a ventilated façade, double paned windows and radiant floor heating.
