El concurso de anteproyectos para construir el nuevo edificio de la Facultad de Economía y Negocios de la Universidad de Chile surgió como respuesta a la necesidad de dar cabida a las nuevas oficinas de académicos que demanda la actual estructura curricular. El Edificio FEN se emplaza en el centro de Santiago, en la intersección de Av. Diagonal Paraguay y Av. Vicuña Mackenna, formando parte del complejo universitario Campus Andrés Bello. Por lo tanto, las principales estrategias debían considerar las variables del contexto y la necesaria vinculación con los edificios existentes, como el Tecnoaulas de la FEN y de Diseño de la FAU, que se emplazan contiguos al terreno del proyecto. Dentro del terreno comprimido se proyecta un edificio con forma de “Z”, contemporáneo y de baja altura, que busca el mayor perímetro de exposición para lograr el máximo de iluminación y ventilación natural para las oficinas proyectadas. La planta acoge situaciones que permitan distintas configuraciones espaciales en el tiempo, donde la forma arquitectónica perdura frente a la organización programática. El edificio se resuelve abierto hacia el exterior en todas sus caras, con una estructura pensada como exoesqueleto, es decir, llevada hacia el exterior, permitiendo así una planta libre que asegure la flexibilidad en su uso. The preliminary design competition for the new building of the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Chile was a response to the need to accommodate the new offices of today's demanding academic curriculum structure. The FEN Building is located in the center of Santiago, at the intersection of Avenida Diagonal Paraguay and Avenida Vicuña Mackenna, part of the Campus Andrés Bello university complex. Therefore, the main strategies should consider the variables of context and necessary link with the existing buildings, such as the FEN Tecnoaulas and the Design Building of the School of Architecture, which are located adjacent to the project site. Within the compressed plot a "Z" shaped building is designed, contemporary and low-rise, seeking the greatest perimeter for maximum exposure to natural light and ventilation for the planned offices. The floor plan contains situations that allow different spatial configurations over time, where the architectural form remains in spite of the changing programmatic organization. The building is open to the exterior on all its sides, with a structure designed as an exoskeleton, allowing an open floor plan that will ensure flexibility in its use.
