How the Foster Family Makes Thanksgiving Extra Special Traditions, Gratitude & Laughter
4. Play games. Host a family game night after dinner to get the whole family laughing. One of my favorites is Mind the Gap, a multi-generational game that challenges everyone to get in groups with others from their generation and answer trivia questions about their eras. Pick whatever activities are family favorites, like card games, name that tune, or charades. 5. Watch the parade while making breakfast. Watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade while cooking a delicious breakfast. Choose one of your favorite morning dishes, like my sister-in-law’s breakfast casserole (I will not disclose the recipe, as Watch a football game together. Even if you’re like me and hate the sport, you can keep it fun by dividing into teams and having the losing party take care of a Thanksgiving chore, like taking out the trash. 7. Don’t discuss politics. Enough said. 8. Clean up crew. Show your hostess some love and have everyone pitch in when it comes time to clean up and put all the leftovers away. Helping out will teach your kids responsibility and the power of collaborative work, and ensure no one is left scrubbing dishes alone. 9. Potluck style. If everybody brings one Thanksgiving dish, all the cooking responsibilities won’t fall it’s a Foster family secret). 6. Watch a football game.
The holidays are a special time, filled with food, laughter, and traditions old and new. Over the years, we’ve discovered little ways to make Thanksgiving even more memorable and fun in my family. 1. Volunteer with your family. Volunteering with your family embodies the spirit of Thanksgiving, teaching your children what it means to give to others and providing memories you’ll cherish for years. Hosea Williams Feed the Hungry and Homeless is a Foster family favorite. All my kids have volunteered to serve food there during Thanksgiving, and it’s become a beloved tradition in our household. To learn more about their volunteer opportunities and services, visit 4hosea.org. • Hosea Williams was a civil rights leader and activist who was part of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s inner circle and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He had a degree in chemistry from Morris Brown College and Atlanta University, right here in the city. 2. Decorate the Christmas tree. Stretch out the holiday cheer by having everyone help decorate the Christmas tree. The kids can make their own ornaments, or your guests can bring some of their favorites. 3. Practice gratitude. Thanksgiving is all about appreciating what you have in life. You can practice gratitude with your family by having everyone think of five things they’re thankful for and sharing them around the dinner table.
on one person, and you’ll get a tasty spread that features your family’s favorite recipes for a multi-generational potluck. For me, it’s the Lyonnaise potatoes with onions my father used to make, the best potatoes ever in the world. 10. Watch a movie. Go to the movie theater or stay home and pick a holiday classic. We like something exciting, like “Avatar,” or educational, like “Sarah’s Oil,” about one of the first Black female millionaires. You can’t go wrong with favorites like “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving,” “Elf,” “A Christmas Carol,” “The Preacher’s Wife,” or “It’s a Wonderful Life.” (Fun fact, the scene where the gym floor opens and everyone falls in the pool was shot at my high school, Beverly Hills High School. Though I attended in the 1980s, the pool you see in the 1946 film was still in great condition. None of us fell in.) Bonus tip: When I’m hostess, I like to make little baskets for my guests with essentials like razors, Advil, toothbrushes, and any other convenience items they might need. You can also make a basket to gift to the host to thank them for all their work to make it a memorable night. Happy Thanksgiving, from all of us at The Foster Firm!

Ways to Give Back During Breast Cancer Awareness Month PINK WITH PURPOSE
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and you can
down with pressure, feeling for any lumps or changes. If you do notice something unusual, contact a health care provider. Schedule Your Mammogram Women over 40 should schedule a mammogram annually because early detection gives them the best chance for successful treatment. It’s never too early to screen. Women who are 25 and older can undergo a risk assessment to determine if they should start screening earlier than 40. Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance plans cover the cost. Stay Active Studies have found that regular physical activity and exercise can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 20% or more. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends exercising at least 30 minutes five days a week to maintain a healthy lifestyle. But every little bit helps. Even a daily walk or 10 minutes of yoga can make a difference in your health. You can use videos online, join a gym or fitness group, or work with a trainer to help you find the right routine and rhythm. Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial in reducing the risk of breast cancer and increasing survival rates. Healthy Habits Work on reducing your stress and establishing healthy habits that help decrease the risk of breast cancer. The link between cancer and alcohol is well-documented, and it’s in the top three preventable risk factors. Avoid or limit your alcohol consumption, because the more you drink, the higher your chance of breast cancer is. Recent studies have also found that getting enough sleep increases cancer survival rates.
do more than wear a pink ribbon to show your support for survivors and those currently battling this disease. Whether you’re walking alongside those impacted by breast cancer, supporting critical research through local fundraisers, or
simply taking the time to educate yourself, it all brings us one step closer to hope, healing, and a cure. No matter how you choose to participate, let’s stand together this year to raise awareness, inspire action, and honor the strength of those touched by breast cancer. Walk, Run, or Dance Breast cancer walks or runs are a popular way to raise funds for awareness, research, and support. No matter your fitness level, you can find a national or local event near you to participate in. Many organizations offer virtual walks so you can join in from anywhere. Arnice has hosted Zumba-a-Thons in the past to fundraise for breast cancer organizations. You can take a page from her book and even host your own fundraiser, whether that’s a walk, bake sale, GoFundMe page, or virtual event. Shop With Purpose Make your purchases count by supporting businesses that give back to breast cancer support and research. Look for companies with special pink-themed collections or products where a portion of the sales is donated to a breast cancer charity. Some shops run flash events and donate a percentage of all sales during a specific period of time. You can visit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation online to find a list of brands that regularly support their work and mission.
Talk to Your Doctor If there is a history of breast cancer in your family, that increases your risk. The CDC recommends that you look through family medical records or talk to your loved ones to get information about any types of cancer relatives have had. Make sure you talk to your doctor about your family history of breast cancer so they can help you schedule screenings appropriately and keep an eye out for warning signs.
Self-Exams Save Lives If you are a woman, use this month as a reminder to do regular self-exams, and encourage the women you love to do the same. Early detection can make a world of difference in
treating cancer. According to Johns Hopkins University, 40% of diagnosed breast cancers were detected by women who felt a lump during a self- exam. Use the pads of your three middle fingers and press

Hollywood’s Mostly Plant-Based Movement FLEXITARIAN GOES A-LIST
Some celebrities go vegan overnight, while others ease in. That second group has been getting bigger lately, with more stars calling themselves flexitarians — those who eat a mostly plant-based diet. The reasons for the shift vary. Some think about the environment, while others focus on health or animal welfare. For Kevin Hart, it started as a way to feel better. He’s now an investor in Beyond Meat, runs a vegan fast-food chain, and still discusses the benefits. Kim Kardashian says eating mostly plant-based meals helps her manage psoriasis, and she’s known to keep vegan tacos in her meal rotation. Harry Styles is a pescatarian and has skipped meat since 2020. He once famously turned down a chicken nugget a fan offered at a concert, tossing it back and telling the crowd he doesn’t eat meat. Cardi B has thought about it, too, especially to help her digestion, but admits giving up meat is hard. Leonardo DiCaprio, a longtime proponent of environmental causes, invests in plant-based companies to promote sustainability, although he hasn’t fully committed to veganism. Serena Williams goes vegan during tennis season to train alongside her sister Venus, who’s been eating a vegan diet for years. Chris Hemsworth once went vegan while filming a Marvel movie and found he could keep his muscle mass without steak.
Some have made plant-based eating a side project. Drew Barrymore became the “Chief Mom Officer” for Quorn. Katy Perry says she’s almost completely vegan, and her former partner, Orlando Bloom, is mostly there, too. Idris Elba and Clint Eastwood have promoted plant-based food for health and environmental reasons, while Snoop Dogg has been a big public supporter of vegan brands. Flexitarian or not, these choices make a difference. Cutting back on meat lowers your carbon footprint
and can improve your health. It’s also a way to support a growing
movement without going cold turkey. And if Hollywood’s most
meat-loving action stars and pop icons can trade a steak for tofu now and then, maybe the rest of us can, too.

Whether you’re looking to book a tropical trip this winter or want to live vicariously through descriptions of dream destinations, this article is for you! From overwater bungalows to swim-up bars, these resorts redefine relaxation in some of the world’s most glamorous getaways. A Spectacular South Asian Sojourn If you want to add flavor to your wintertime festivities with an international jaunt, the Maldives, just southwest of India, is home to some of the world’s most renowned resorts. Celebrated for its spacious rooms, private pools, and “floating breakfasts,” The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, boasts seven restaurants offering a vast array of global delicacies. Another Maldives mainstay, Soneva Fushi, offers some of the largest overwater villas in the world — perfect for viewing the area’s breathtakingly clear waters.
And if you’re a fan of exploring tropical travel via social media, you’ve likely caught an eyeful of Instagram favorite Soneva Jani. This Maldives destination provides guests plenty of playful options, ranging from a waterslide to a trip on one of the resort’s seaplanes. Of course, an extraordinary vacation doesn’t necessarily mean spending time in an expansive environment. Those looking to balance luxury with a low-key vibe should check out Gili Lankanfushi Maldives, a boutique resort that invites guests to lounge on a private water hammock as their worries wash away. Fresh Perks in French Polynesia Outdoor bungalows are also a big hit in Bora Bora. In addition to in-room pools, the Four Seasons Bora Bora resort offers guests a view of Mount Otemanu that all intrepid travelers should experience at least once.
Over at the Westin Bora Bora, vacationers can take in the locale’s modern aesthetics while sipping cocktails at its swim-up bar. If you plan to travel with a large group, the two-story Presidential Suites and overwater villas at the Conrad Bora Bora Nui are outstanding options. Not surprisingly, Bora Bora isn’t the only place to visit in French Polynesia. Although the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa tends to book up quickly due to its smaller size, it’s worth trying to get a room for this vacation spot’s famous snorkeling sites alone.
