3 Books Offer Fresh Takes on Staying Active as You Age HEALTHY FOR LIFE
‘Genius Foods’ by Max Lugavere and Dr. Paul Grewal.
I have read that most people pass away in their 80s because they think they should pass away in their 80s. Perhaps if you believe you’ll live longer, you will!
After Lugavere’s mother was diagnosed with dementia in her 50s, he asked her doctor for treatments to reverse the damage. “There is nothing we can do,” the doctor said. For the next five years, Lugavere turned his skills as a journalist to researching ways to prevent Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. His discoveries shed light on dietary changes that combat cognitive disease and improve mental clarity at any age. One of his central findings
One of my goals is to stay healthy for as long as possible, so I have already started believing I will live beyond my 80s, and I am changing my diet and exercise habits to get there. Along the way, I have found three books that have really advanced my thinking.
‘Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity’ by Dr. Peter Attia This 2023 bestseller by a physician and popular podcast host describes the preventive practices that could improve longevity and shows why our health care system fails to deliver them. Early in life, people make lifestyle, diet, and exercise choices that contribute to heart attacks,

diabetes, cancer, or dementia later on, and these conditions build up over a long period. By the time patients come to their physicians for diagnoses, it is too late. Also, physicians are trained to treat disease symptoms rather than prevent it. I suspect this book’s nutrition, exercise, and sleep suggestions will help me reach my goals.
“If you are wondering how to live longer, stay healthy and active, or avoid dementia and heart attacks, check into these books for motivation!”
These three books have motivated me to plan on living longer! I had already begun eliminating processed foods from my diet, but now I am cutting them out altogether. I also intend to build more exercise into my daily routine and adopt a healthier lifestyle overall. When I was younger, I hiked a lot. I love getting out in nature and walking outside. My wife and I plan to start walking together for an hour or so every day. When we vacation or take time off together, we can find cool places to hike near us here in Louisiana.
‘Younger Next Year’ by Chris Crowley and Henry S. Lodge. Crowley, a retired lawyer in his 80s, and Lodge, a physician, wrote this book based on Crowley’s desire to live longer and Dr. Lodge’s prescriptions for doing so. The authors show how humans evolved and recommend exercise, diet, and lifestyle changes to conform to our bodies’ innate need for exercise. They recommend a program of healthy eating, nutrition, exercise, and social connections to help the body start repairing damage already done and preventing half the

diseases of old age. Crowley’s own experience is relevant: The authors published the first edition of this book in 2007, and Crowley was just as healthy and active when the second edition came out in 2019.

Become a Modern- Day Explorer HOW GEOCACHING LETS YOU HUNT FOR HIDDEN TREASURES Movies like “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “The Goonies,” and “National Treasure” have inspired generations to hunt for buried treasure. We’ve all dreamt of discovering a forgotten relic that would change the world and earn us fame and fortune. Most of us will likely never uncover any artifacts worth an article in our local newspapers, but that doesn’t mean we have to give up on the treasure-hunting dream. Going on your very own treasure hunt has never been easier, thanks to geocaching. For those unfamiliar, geocaching is a treasure-hunting game that invites people worldwide to search for and discover hidden caches. You can find hidden secrets around your community and beyond using a GPS and a geocaching app. Geocaching is the official app and one of the best places to start your geocaching expedition. From there, you just have to pick a cache nearby and start searching. There are a few different types of caches to discover. The most common is the basic cache, requiring you to go to a specific GPS coordinate. There, you’ll use observational skills to locate the cache. Inside, you’ll likely find a logbook to record your name before putting it back in place for the next explorer. Another type, an EarthCache, doesn’t
As we age, staying physically active whenever possible becomes increasingly important. However, many of us start to experience difficulties with our normal exercise routines as we approach our senior years. It’s not as easy to go for an extended run, lift weights, or participate in sports, so we have to start looking for less intense alternatives that still boost our physical fitness and keep us entertained. Electric bicycles, also known as e-bikes, are becoming a popular fitness trend for older Americans. When did you last take your bicycle from the garage or storage and ride around town? It’s probably been several years, but many of us have fond memories from our youth of biking to a friend’s house or a local hotspot. E-bikes are making it possible for us to relive those memories without risking injury or overexertion. The technology behind e-bikes has improved significantly in recent years. They’re now more user-friendly and accessible than ever before. Some models even have built-in GPS to ensure you never get lost, regardless of whether you’re riding through city streets, peaceful neighborhoods, or scenic nature trails. Many e-bikes are lightweight and easier to maneuver than traditional bikes. E-biking provides amazing physical and mental health benefits that are easily noticeable after only a few rides. You’ll see improvements in cardiovascular health, muscle strength, weight management, balance, and mood. Plus, it’s a low-impact activity, so you can explore to your heart’s content while also being kind to your joints. While e-bikes present opportunities to improve your physical fitness while limiting your risk for injury, they’re also a great way to meet like- minded people in your community. You can find e-biking clubs and events nationwide, and many host group rides throughout the year. It’s a great way to meet new friends! An e-bike can boost your overall well-being, but follow all safety measures, such as wearing a helmet and obeying road signs. Even though e-bikes are safer and more efficient than ever, you can still get injured while riding, especially if you are going too fast for road conditions — some e-bikes can get up to speeds of almost 30 mph. geographical feature. Those looking for a real challenge will enjoy finding mystery caches that require the discoverer to solve a riddle, cipher, or puzzle.
Once you’ve discovered your fair share of geocaches, you may want to explore the other side of the operation and hide some yourself. Most members of the geocaching community recommend that you discover and log at least 20 caches before hiding your own. That way, you’ll be familiar with the rules of hiding and maintaining a cache.
Geocaching is a great way to get outdoors and reignite your passion for exploring. You never know what you’ll find!
What are you waiting for? Get riding! Your body and mind will thank you!

LOST BUT NOT FORGOTTEN A Determined Feline Finds His Way Home No Matter the Distance
Cats are known for many things: their independence, impeccable balancing skills, and endless fascination with shoelaces. However, who would have guessed that our beloved feline friends have an innate GPS built into their brains? This furry tale of two kitties all started when a California couple, Benny and Susanne Anguiano, decided to take their two cats, Rayne Beau and Starr Jasmyn, on their first trip to Yellowstone National Park. The couple says this wasn’t the cats’ first rodeo. In fact, they loved looking out the big windows of the RV at the different wildlife. However, their epic park adventure turned into a nightmare on this particular trip. Shortly after arriving at Yellowstone, something startled Rayne Beau, and he ran into the forest. The couple searched for him for four days, leaving out some of his favorite treats and toys to lure Ginger-Glazed Mahi Mahi
him back to them. Unfortunately, Benny and Susanne’s efforts were short-lived, and they had to return home to Salinas, California. Susanne never lost hope and recalls a moment during their trek home when she saw a double rainbow in the sky. “That’s a sign for our Rayne Beau that he’s going to be okay,” she said.
The Anguianos finally got the call they had been waiting for about two months after their Yellowstone trip. Their microchip enrollment company called and said Rayne Beau had been found and turned in to the Placer SPCA in Roseville, California (over 800 miles from Yellowstone and 200 miles from their home)! The next day, Benny and Susanne drove to Roseville to pick up Rayne Beau. Upon arrival, they discovered he had lost 6 pounds, had minor paw injuries, and was malnourished. While seeing their beloved fur baby in such a condition wasn't easy, the Anguianos made it a point to fit their cats with AirTags and Rayne Beau with a GPS tracker. Rayne Beau's ability to find his way back home remains a mystery. However, it proves that love (and feline internal GPS) can overcome any obstacle, no matter the distance.
