Partida de Chile Luego de estudiar Arquitectura, Roberto Matta deja Chile en un viaje “sin regreso” con rumbo a Europa, en una búsqueda por recorrer lugares, museos, talleres y estudiar con destacados arquitectos y artistas. Esta voluntad por mantener un cruce simultáneo entre arte y arquitectura se mantendrá hasta 1938, cuando decide continuar con la pintura como camino y posteriormente emigrar a Estados Unidos. Destacan en este período de búsqueda las Cartas a Luis Mitrovic 6 , donde en primera persona describe sus principales indagaciones. Estas comienzan en 1935, y a medida que avanzan se puede advertir una mirada más crítica hacia los propios ideales inicialmente buscados, sobre todo en lo que respecta a Le Corbusier:
Leaving Chile
After studying architecture, Roberto Matta leaves Chile on a one way trip to Europe, on a quest to visit places, museums, workshops and study with renowned architects and artists. This will to maintain a simultaneous intersection between art and architecture will be kept until 1938, when he decides to continue with painting as his path and later migrates to the United States. Of this search period stand out the letters to Luis Mitrovic 6 , where he describes in first person his main inquiries. These begin in 1935, and as they progress they reveal a more critical eye towards the ideals initially sought, especially in regard to Le Corbusier:
