Roberto Matta es conocido universalmente por su obra pictórica, sin embargo, no hay que olvidar que su formación fue de arquitecto. Es la faceta que quisimos rescatar en el artículo central de esta edición y mostrar tempranos diseños arquitectónicos que ya anuncian su notable veta como pintor. Junto al “Palacio de la Velocidad” de Jorge Aguirre Silva, su proyecto de título “La Liga de las Religiones” marcó un hito en la arquitectura universitaria de los años ’30. El artículo del arquitecto Marcelo Sarovic sintetiza el paso de la arquitectura a la pintura en la obra de Matta, la cual se comprende mejor al ligarla a esta raíz. El Comité Editorial conversó con el arquitecto argentino César Pelli, uno de los latinoamericanos más prestigiados a nivel internacional, quien estuvo en Chile para ver los avances del edificio Costanera Center. Con humildad y generosidad Pelli habló de su oficina, de su forma de trabajar y de su visión en torno a temas actuales, todo lo cual explica el enorme éxito e impacto de su obra en diversas partes del mundo. Como AOA, estimamos que el diseño y la renovación de proyectos importantes a través de concursos nacionales de arquitectura es el mejor y más justo sistema para lograr una calidad y excelencia acordes con el desarrollo de nuestro país. Por ello, de manera extraordinaria esta vez incluimos cinco relevantes certámenes realizados en el último tiempo: el Eje Bulnes, que completará el trazado original de Karl Brunner; la recuperación del Palacio Pereira, como una muestra de clara voluntad de rescate patrimonial; el auditórium de la Escuela Naval de Valparaíso, complemento clave al emblemático conjunto; el Borde Costero de Santo Domingo y la Costanera de Valdivia, ambos enfocados a valorizar el paisaje e integrar los bienes naturales de nuestros pueblos y ciudades. Otro aporte en línea con los objetivos de la AOA es la nueva sección dedicada a Arquitectura Emergente, que iniciamos con la oficina Panorama, conformada por los jóvenes arquitectos Nicolás Valdés y Constanza Hagemann. Una singular planta embotelladora de aguas en medio de un bosque patagónico, una casa amurallada en la costa y un sauna en el lago Ranco representan los fundamentos de su breve pero consistente portafolio de obras. Hacemos un llamado a las oficinas de arquitectos menores de 35 años para que nos envíen obras, con el objeto de compartirlas en esta sección. En cuanto a las obras desarrolladas por nuestros asociados, para este número seleccionamos cuatro proyectos que, cada uno en su estilo y contexto, aportan a su entorno: el Parque Bicentenario de la Infancia, de Elemental Arquitectos; el Hotel Refugia en Chiloé, de Mobil Arquitectos; la sede Inacap de Santiago Centro, de Estudio Larraín, y la Estación Puerto de Valparaíso, de Murtinho + Raby. Roberto Matta is universally known for his pictorial work, however, we must not forget he was educated as an architect. This is the aspect we wanted to showcase in the main article of this issue showing the early architectural designs that already proclaim his remarkable talent as a painter. Next to the “Palace of Speed” by Jorge Aguirre Silva, his degree project titled “The League of Religions” was a milestone in college architecture of the ‘30s. The article by architect Marcelo Sarovic summarizes the transition of Matta’s work from architecture to painting, the latter of which is best understood by relating to this origin. The Editorial Committee met Argentine architect César Pelli, one of the most internationally prestigious Latin Americans, who came to Chile to see the progress of the Costanera Center building. With humility and generosity Pelli spoke of his office, his way of working and his vision on current issues, all of which explains the enormous success and impact of his work in various parts of the world. At AOA, we believe that design and renovation of major projects through national architectural competitions is the best and fairest system to achieve quality and excellence in line with the development of our country. Therefore, we include extraordinarily this time five important recent competitions: the Bulnes Axis, which will complete the original layout by Karl Brunner, the recovery of the Pereira Palace, as a sign of the clear will to rescue our heritage, the auditorium of the Naval Academy of Valparaíso, a key complement to the iconic complex; the Coastal Border of Santo Domingo and the Waterfront Promenade of Valdivia, both aimed at enhancing the landscape and integrating the natural assets to our towns and cities. Another contribution in line with the objectives of the AOA is the new section dedicated to Emerging Architecture, which we begin with the Panorama office, formed by young architects Nicolás Valdés and Constanza Hagemann. A unique water bottling plant in the middle of a Patagonian forest, a walled house on the coast and a sauna on Ranco Lake represent the foundations of their brief but consistent portfolio of works. We call on the offices of architects under 35 to send us their works to share them in this section. As for the works developed by our partners, for this number we have selected four projects, each of which, with their own style and context, contribute to their environment: the Bicentennial Children’s Park, by Elemental Arquitectos, the Refugia Hotel in Chiloé, by Mobil Arquitectos; Inacap headquarters in downtown Santiago, by Larraín Studio, and Puerto Station of Valparaiso, by Murtinho + Raby.
