So in 2008, after several attempts to get authorities interested in achieving such a public space, we finally saw an opportunity that could work as a foundational moment for the Promenade. JUNJI, the National Service of Daycare Centers, was looking for a place to create a Children’s Park on the most western side of the San Cristobal hill using its upper limit as the first phase of the Metropolitan Promenade. The site we were given had a steep slope and we decided to transform its difficulty into its major benefit. The slope could be used to dissolve the old dilemma of children’s parks: do we make them safe or do we make them fun? Being on a hillside, allowed us to accumulate height for the slides for example (fun), without ever being more than 30 centimeters away from the ground (safe). Or it enabled to make tree house that were on the copa of the trees without ever climbing but only by walking horizontally. The upper limit of the Children’s Park coincided with the old irrigation canal, so when the Children’s Park was inaugurated in April 2012, it also meant the first phase of the entire promenade was inaugurated. Soon after, the Metropolitan Park’s Administration added 1 kilometer in order to connect the Children’s Park with the nearby Zoo.
Es así como en el 2008, luego de varios intentos por conseguir autoridades interesadas en conseguir este espacio público, finalmente vimos una oportunidad que podría funcionar como el impulso fundacional del Paseo. La JUNJI, Junta Nacional de Jardines Infantiles, estaba buscando un lugar para crear el Parque de la Infancia en la parte más occidental del cerro San Cristóbal, con su límite superior como la primera fase del Paseo Metropolitano. El sitio asignado tenía una fuerte pendiente y decidimos transformar esta dificultad en su mayor beneficio. La pendiente podía ser utilizada para desarmar el viejo dilema de los parques infantiles: ¿los hacemos seguros o los hacemos entretenidos? El estar en una ladera nos permitió situar la posición de los resbalines, por ejemplo (diversión), a no más de 30 centímetros del suelo (seguridad). Y permitió hacer casas en las copas de los árboles sin tener que escalar, sino sólo caminar en horizontal. El límite superior del Parque de la Infancia coincide con el antiguo canal de regadío, por lo que cuando fue inaugurado en abril de 2012, también significó que fue inaugurada la primera fase del paseo completo. Poco después, la Administración del Parque Metropolitano añadió 1 kilómetro para conectar el Parque de la Infancia con el Zoológico.
