El edificio original (1937) Diseñado por el arquitecto Luis Herreros E., el edificio de la Estación Puerto se considera un excepcional exponente de la arquitectura nacional y porteña. En términos generales, interior y exteriormente se respetaron sus formas, y dada la gran altura del espacio interior se le dio especial importancia a la calidad de la luz natural. Como la llegada y estación de trenes fue trasladada a 60 metros de su ubicación original, se hizo necesario dar nueva vida al inmueble, que hoy cuenta con un patio de comidas, una galería de arte y locales comerciales. Hacia el exterior, se plantearon locales que puedan extender su uso hacia la Plaza Sotomayor, tales como terrazas de cafés y restaurantes. El edificio nuevo (2011) Se reconstruyó la fachada de las bodegas de la estación, lo que permitió dar continuidad al paseo costanera borde mar hasta su llegada a la Plaza Sotomayor por medio de la creación de un portal a lo largo de Avenida Errázuriz. Debido a que esta zona de Valparaíso es relleno –antiguamente había mar–, el edificio fue fundado en aproximadamente 120 pilotes de hormigón de 1,5 m de diámetro, alcanzando una profundidad de entre 25 y 35 m (es decir, es mayor la altura bajo tierra que en superficie).
The original building (1937) Designed by architect Luis Herreros E., the Puerto Station building is considered an exceptional example of national and port architecture. Overall, its forms were respected inside and outside, and due to the large height of the interior space special importance was given to the quality of natural light. Since the final stop and train station was moved 60 meters from its original location, it became necessary to give new life to the building, which now has a food court, an art gallery and retail space. On the exterior the proposal placed shops that can extend their use towards Plaza Sotomayor, such as café terraces and restaurants. The new building (2011) The facade of the storage building of the station was rebuilt, which allowed giving continuity to the coastline promenade as it reaches Plaza Sotomayor by means of the creation of a portal along Avenida Errazuriz. Because this area of Valparaiso is filling –the sea originally occupied this place– the building was founded on approximately 120 concrete piles 1.5 m in diameter, reaching a depth of between 25 and 35 m (i.e. the underground depth is greater than the surface height).
