Fruto de un intenso y extenso trabajo de investigación, esta publicación aborda el legado de uno de los arquitectos más versátiles y autónomos de la primera mitad del siglo XX chileno: Josué Smith Solar (1867-1938). En más de 200 páginas, con abundantes dibujos, imágenes e ilustraciones, el libro constituye la más completa recopilación fotográfica y archivística de la obra de Smith Solar realizada en Chile, relevante considerando que gran parte de su material de trabajo se perdió. Según muestra el autor, Mario Pérez de Arce, la vida del arquitecto chillanejo mezcló ingeniería, paisajismo, urbanismo y construcción, trazando un camino propio dentro de la arquitectura nacional. Si bien su obra suele identificarse por grandes casonas estilo Tudor, su gran legado arquitectónico se plasmó en edificios como el Club Hípico, el Hotel Carrera, el Ministerio de Hacienda y la fachada sur de La Moneda. A product of an intensive and extensive research, this publication addresses the legacy of one of the most versatile and autonomous architects of the first half of the 20 th century in Chile: Josué Smith Solar (1867-1938). In over 200 pages, with plenty of drawings, images and illustrations, the book constitutes the most comprehensive photographic and archival compilations of the work of Smith Solar made in Chile, a relevant endeavor considering that great part of his work material was lost. According to Pérez de Arce, the life of the architect born in Chillán mixed engineering, landscaping, urban planning and construction, charting his own path in the national architecture scene. While his work is often related to large Tudor style manors, his great architectural legacy is reflected in buildings such as the Club Hípico horse racetrack, the Carrera Hotel, the Ministry of Finance and the south façade of La Moneda presidential palace.
El destacado crítico español Luis Fernandez-Galiano, catedrático y director de AV/Arquitectura Viva, es quien se encarga de hacer la presentación del último libro de Enrique Browne, uno de los arquitectos chilenos más destacados de la última década, Premio Nacional de Arquitectura 2010 e integrante del comité editorial de Revista AOA. Browne analiza el escenario en que se desenvuelve la crítica hoy partiendo por lo que llama el “asunto ético” y tocando aspectos como la necesaria distinción entre crítica a la obra y crítica al autor, objetividad y subjetividad, vistazo al espíritu de la época contemporánea y su posible impacto en la arquitectura actual. Para Browne, la crítica es la principal forma de selección y reflexión que tiene la arquitectura, no sólo realizada por los expertos cronistas, sino con un componente que radica en la docencia y en los talleres de arquitectura. La crítica de la nueva época es un acercamiento a las inquietudes y problemas extraídos de la propia experiencia. The prominent Spanish critic Luis Fernandez-Galiano, professor and director of AV/Arquitectura Viva, is in charge of the presentation of the last book by Enrique Browne, one of the most outstanding Chilean architects of the last decade, recipient of the 2010 National Architecture Award and member of the editorial board of AOA Magazine. Browne discusses the scenario in which critique unfolds today starting with what he calls the “ethical issue” and presenting aspects such as the necessary distinction between criticism of the work and of the author, objectivity and subjectivity, a look at the spirit of contemporary times and its possible impact on present day architecture. For Browne, criticism is the main form of selection and reflection in the field of architecture, not only written by the experts, but as a component of teaching and architectural design workshops. Criticism of the new era is an approach to the concerns and problems drawn from personal experience.
Tras el terremoto y maremoto de febrero de 2010 en Chile, la AOA se involucró a fondo en proyectos de reconstrucción de diversa índole y envergadura, abordando desde el diseño hasta su construcción e implementación. Editado por el área de Publicaciones de la Asociación de Oficinas de Arquitectos de Chile, este libro recopila los principales proyectos, todos ellos pro bono: Plan Maestro para la recuperación de Juan Fernández; La Ruta de las Caletas; Escuelas para Chile; propuesta para la Reconstrucción de la imagen urbana de pueblos de la zona central. Junto con mostrar imágenes, planos y fichas técnicas, el relato da cuenta de cómo se gestaron y desarrollaron las obras, en las que participó un número considerable de oficinas. Con prólogo del Ministro de Vivienda y Urbanismo, Los Arquitectos en la Reconstrucción se desarrolló con el patrocinio de ProChile y fue presentado en la Bienal de Urbanismo y Arquitectura de Shenzhen&Hong Kong. After the February 2010 earthquake and tsunami in Chile, the AOA became deeply involved in reconstruction projects of different nature and size, from the design to the construction and implementation stages. Edited by the Publications department of the Architectural Office Association of Chile, this book compiles the main projects, all pro bono: the Master Plan for the recovery of Juan Fernández; the Route of The Coves; Schools for Chile; the proposal for the Reconstruction of the urban image of the towns of the central region. Along with presenting images, drawings and technical data, the articles tell how they were conceived and developed, with the participation of a considerable number of studios. With a foreword by the Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, Architects in the Reconstruction was developed with the support of ProChile, the Chile Promotion Bureau, and was presented at the 2011 Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi&City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture.
Nacido a mediados de los años 40, el invencionismo argentino incubó líneas importantes del arte de Argentina, como Madí, el Arte Concreto-Intervención y el Perceptismo. El arquitecto trasandino Alejandro Crispiani -académico de la Universidad Católica y también colaborador de Revista AOA- presenta un estudio que parte del invencionismo para reconstruir la trayectoria de su impulso radical en dos direcciones, la que lleva a la arquitectura y la que lleva al diseño industrial, y en ambos casos en un territorio distinto de aquel en que se originó. El escrito traza por primera vez las relaciones entre el arte invencionista, la Escuela de Arquitectura de Valparaíso -promotora de algunas de las más osadas iniciativas de vanguardia de la región- y las experiencias del Grupo de Diseño liderado por Gui Bonsiepe. Born in the mid 40's, Argentinian inventionism incubated important lines in Argentine art, such as Madí, Concrete Art-Intervention and Perceptualism. The transandine architect Alejandro Crispiani -professor at Universidad Católica and collaborator of AOA Magazine as well- presents a study that begins with inventionism and reconstructs the path of its radical impulse in two directions, one leading to architecture and another to industrial design, and in both cases to a territory different from the one from which they began. The text outlines for the first time the relationships between inventionist art, the School of Architecture of Valparaíso -promoter of one of the boldest avant gardes of the region- and the experience of the Design Group led by Gui Bonsiepe.
