Regarding the Crowley House, in the Marfa desert, what determined its location and design? - Marfa is a special place, a hamlet of 2000 people in the middle of an overwhelming landscape, with a lot of sky. We had to move from the vast to the concentrated. There was nothing there and the 800m 2 (8,600 sqf) house of had to relate to the topography. The architectural idea was to link to the distant as well as with the nearby landscape; patios and gardens come together in the house. That is why we began to plant trees while doing the site contouring, as a way of making the house grow with the vegetation. One of the obligations of architecture lies in appeasing contradictions: when we finished this house we did a certain violence to the landscape, we broke into it. But time would mend the scar until the architecture could become lost in the landscape and cease to be the main protagonist. The idea was to create a presence and a camouflage, with allows for a more diversified existence. Architecture is part of an assembly, although it is the most important part because it brings together all the elements. If architecture wasn’t there this landscape would only be a hill, and in this case, in accepting the condition of being part of what was already there, the house has enriched the place.

Con respecto a la Casa Crowley, en el desierto de Marfa, ¿qué definió su emplazamiento y diseño? - Marfa es un lugar especial, un pueblito de 2.000 personas en medio de un paisaje impresionante, con mucho cielo. Había que pasar de la vastedad a lo concentrado. En el lugar no había nada y la casa, de 800 m2, debía relacionarse a la topografía. La idea de la arquitectura fue entrelazarla con el paisaje distante y también con el inmediato, los patios y jardines que convergen en el interior. Por eso, al comenzar a mover la tierra empezamos a plantar árboles, como una forma de hacer crecer la casa con la vegetación. Uno de los deberes de la arquitectura radica en apaciguar las contradicciones: cuando terminamos esta vivienda creamos una cierta violencia en el paisaje, irrumpimos en él. Pero con el tiempo debía cicatrizarse hasta que la arquitectura se pudiera perder en su paisaje, no ser la protagonista principal. La idea fue crear una presencia y un camuflaje, que permite también existir con más posibilidades. La arquitectura es parte de un ensamblaje, si bien es lo más importante porque reúne todos los elementos. Si no estuviera la arquitectura este paisaje sería solo una colina, y en este caso, al aceptar su condición de formar parte de lo que allí existe, la casa ha enriquecido el lugar.
