Welcome back to the new school year to all our families and a very warm welcome to the new families joining our Lakes Community in 2023. I hope you all had a terrific summer break and enjoyed lots of quality family time. How good was the weather! A massive shout out to our Preps who have had a wonderful start and have settled into school life with ease. It was great seeing parents, grandparents and other family members supporting students on their first day. Well done to our Prep team who did a power of work to ensure the smooth transition for students and families. 2023 will be a very exciting year for our school. We will continue to work proactively to further develop our home - school partnership as we strive to ensure that our students are provided with an environment and experience that enables them to make strong connections, grow their curiosity and embrace challenges. The Lakes has so many strengths as a school community and this school year is another opportunity for us to take the next steps to keep ensuring that our school is a great place to be in 2023. It is so important that home - school partnership continues to be strong. The door is always open so please don ’ t hesitate to come in and see me on the Primary Campus or Bill and Bonnie up on Secondary. BE ON TIME FOR SCHOOL EVERY DAY Each day we start with the first bell ringing at 8.55am. This is the signal for students to line up in front of their classrooms and get ready for learning before the 9am bell rings. We know that getting off to a great start each day is critical for learning, so we are encouraging everyone to be on time and ready to go inside classrooms by the 9am bell. Before school yard duty commences at 8.45am each morning. This is my favourite part of the day as it gives me a chance to see the students and parents. Please don ’ t hesitate to come have a chat if you see me in the yard or have any questions. At the other end of the day, a bell will ring at 3.15pm where students will be dismissed. A reminder that if your son/daughter arrives to school late, a parent/carer is required to come in and sign them in via

the front office, this is also the process for picking up for early departure. Any student who remains at school after 3.30pm and not picked up will be taken to the front office.

It was my honour last week to announce our Student Leaders for 2023 to our school community at our first assembly. With over 60 students nominating at the end of 2022 for leadership positions and staff working through the process of narrowing it down, we have finally reached a decision of who our student leaders will be in 2023. A massive thank you to all students who nominated and presented to staff. We are proud of the high calibre of applicants which made the panels job extremely hard. Our staff look forward to working with these students across the year.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

Please be reminded that students need to be wearing their school hat during all recess and lunch breaks in Terms 1 and 4. It has been great seeing students in correct school uniform to start 2023. Please be reminded that students need to have all black shoes as part of our uniform policy. Any issues, please speak to your child ’ s teacher or come in and speak with me at school.

Congratulations to the following students:

2023 School Captains – Neha P, Kiara T, Ashwin B, Harry S

ROAD SAFETY AROUND SCHOOLS

2023 House Captains –

Speed zones, pedestrian crossings and parking restrictions around school are there to improve the movement of traffic during peak times and maximise safety for children and road users. It is vital that as adults, we lead by example and set good road safety practices travelling to and from school. As such we are asking all parents and carers to observe and obey parking signs. Our kiss and drop zone before school is not for parents to get out of their car and walk their child into school but is used for a quick drop off in the morning. Thank you for your cooperation to keep everyone safe during this busy time. Whittlesea City Council have asked us to remind our school community that it is an offence to:

Jackson – Yvonne Y, Alexia P Evans – Milly D, Olivia V

Rafter – Noah M - T, Ethan Z

Beachley – Tijana M, Milly R

2023 Peer Mediators – Tessa B, Imogen J, Hiya D, Jahmin S, Saanvi C, Tri Thanh L, Miriam M, Maddison B, Taylah G

2023 PRIMARY ASSEMBLY - Term 1

We have had a slight change to our assembly format in 2023. We will now be having whole campus Prep - 6 assembles every fortnight in our gym. Council Local Laws Officers will be active around our school area to issue warnings. Any concerns regarding this, please speak to the council.

HAVE INPUT INTO OUR SCHOOL … SCHOOL COUNCIL NOMINATIONS OPEN SOON We know that one of our school ’ s key strengths is our strong parent input and involvement. Our School Council is one the main forums in which parents and staff work together for the benefit of all our students. At the beginning of each school year, we have a number of vacancies for School Council. There are 4 x Parent member positions to fill this year for a period of two years. If you are interested in nominating, please speak to our Business Manager, Dale or a member of our Leadership team. Keep your eyes open for information to be sent home to families via the newsletter.

Looking forward to a rewarding 2023. Thank you for all your support.

Have a wonderful weekend.

JUNIOR NETBALL ON THE RISE AT BUNDOORA

Bundoora junior netball coach Emily Duggan is hopeful that the early success of the NFNL junior netball program will inspire more children to get involved in the sport. The Bulls are one of six clubs that compete in the first edition of the NFNL junior netball summer competition and are one of five clubs to boast two or more sides, with both teams competing in the under - 13 section. Duggan explained that the formation of the junior sides came about thanks to a great amount of interest from both the kids and the parents, going on to

that we were able to create two teams.

continuing on to play netball and just being passionate about it and having fun, ” she said. “ The thing that I like the most is just seeing their faces, whether they score a goal or they do something well, that ’ s the most important part for me. ” Duggan hopes that the expansion of the junior netball competition will create a fundamental path for children to get involved in netball from a young age. “ When I grew up, there were quite a lot of teams and you could see the pathways, but between then and now, there weren ’ t as many competitions, and participation in the sport for young children had gone down, ” she said. “ That ’ s why it ’ s very important for this junior competition, so we can get kids back playing not just junior netball, but sport in general. ”

“ That then created two options, one was to play in a Saturday morning competition where I used to play, but I was more drawn to the other option, the NFNL competition, not only because I play for Bundoora but also it was quite convenient being on a Wednesday night rather than a weekend. That was more of a factor not just for me, but for parents too. ” Duggan has been involved with the Bundoora netball program since 2013, playing 171 matches and scoring 2130 goals across both summer and winter competitions as of the end of the 2022 year. The joy and excitement Duggan gets out of playing netball with Bundoora is something she hopes to introduce to her players throughout the summer season, saying that while learning and improving their skills is important, the most crucial thing is that they enjoy their experience on the court. “ I just want to see them gain a passion for netball, that ’ s what I had when I grew up and I guess it ’ s just more of what I want to see, just them

say that joining the NFNL was a convenient choice for everyone involved.

“ I was made coach at the The Lakes South Morang College that I work at as an integration aid and gained quite a bit of interest from the students … they always kept asking me about different competitions that I might know of because they wanted to play netball outside of school, ” she said. “ I created a bit of a presentation for the parents just to grasp interest from them and we just had so much interest
