erated. They must be left behind—hid den “under the oak” at Shechem. To day some people are trying to servo God with one hand while holding on to the world with the other. This cannot be done. “ Ye cannot serve God and mammon” (Matt. 6:24). Jacob did the right thing in putting Shechem behind him before he tried to enjoy God at Bethel. It always works this way. The Unusual Journey v. 5 It is remarkable the care that God takes of His own when they follow His will. In this instance a supernatural fear came upon the Canaanites round about which prevented them from doing any harm to Jacob and his family as they traveled. It is a lesson that we do well to remember. When a person is separated unto God, there is no power on earth, in heaven or in hell, that can molest him. Paul said, “If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Rom. 8:31). The Strict Obedience vv. 6, 7 Not much explanation is needed here. Jacob simply did what God had told him (v. 1). He did it in the memory of what happened in the days that were past when he was in fellowship with God at Bethel. See 28:11-22. Thus Ja cob exercised wisdom. When God shows us what to do, we ought to do it with out any deviation. The Heavenly Revelation vv. 9-13 There was now no cloud between Ja cob and God. Consequently, Jacob re ceived a revelation from heaven in which he was assured of God’s favor and bless ing in the days to come. Whenever the child of God puts God first in his life, there is no telling what may be the out come in blessing. Jacob became a na tion. You, too, will be given some sort of a kingdom over which to rule.
For the next three months we will be considering some of the great charac ters of the Old and New Testaments. They will be allowed to walk before us again in order that we may learn some thing from their attitudes and aims which will help us to live more worth while lives today. Nothing is more in teresting to study than people. The Spirit of God has seen fit.to give us biographies of people of varied kinds so that by their different experiences we may learn how best to respond to the various situations of life. We begin with Jacob. He faced a crisis. His re sponse to this crisis had much to do with the changing of his name from Jacob (supplanter) to Israel (prince with God). The Divine Call v. 1 Jacob had been in Bethel before. In chapter 28 we have the record of his experience with God there and the vows he made. Bethel means house of God. It was the place of fellowship. How wonderfully had God revealed Himself to His servant there! But Jacob had wandered far from Bethel. God had not been given first place in his life. Much in his conduct was godless and selfish. He needed to get back to Bethel. In the verse before us God ten derly calls him to renew his fellowship. Have you wandered from Bethel? Do you need to get back? God calls you by His Word and by His Spirit. The Definite Preparation vv. 2-4 Before going to Bethel, Jacob realized that there were some things that needed to be rectified in his life and that of his family. The situation in his home was sapping his spiritual life. Jacob had allowed to abide in his household “ strange gods.” Uncleanness, also, marked his outward life. One cannot worship God if such things are tol- J U N E , 1 9 5 0
