King's Business - 1950-06

If He denies one thing, He will give something very much better. We need to remember that when God says “ No” to a desire that we have, it is for a good purpose and “ No” is just as definitely an answer as “Yes.” David’s Humble Submission 2 Sam. 7:17-22 A striking scene is here presented. It is the only instance in Scripture in which any one is said to be seated while pouring out his heart to God. David is like a child who sits down by his father to talk over things of great interest. David’s prayer expresses deep wonder at God’s dealing with him in the past and at His plans for him in the future. This wonder kindles in David an intense adoration and gratitude to God for Himself and His providence. It ought always to be so when God’s children sit down with God. Helps for the Children David, A King Who Honored God 2 Sam. 7:1-6, 12-22 Memory Verse: “Thou art great, O Lord God: for there is none like thee” (2 Sam. 7:22). King David was an old man. His enemies had been overcome with God’s help so that his kingdom was enjoying peace. One day David thought of his own beautiful palace and compared it with the Lord’s house which was far less beautiful and substantial. God did not allow David to build Him a house of worship. He told David that his son, Solomon, was to be the one to whom this honor would be given. Doubtless David was disappointed, but he was willing to give up his own way and his plans to obey God’s will. David’s heart rejoiced when God told him of His plans to make David’s kingdom a great and an everlasting kingdom. With humble thanksgiving the great king exclaimed: “ Thou art great, O Lord God:, for there is none like thee” ! Is it hard for you to give up your own way to others? Sometimes the things which seem best to us are not really the best for us. Those who are older and more experienced can see rea sons why other ways are better than our way. Pray that your love for your Lord will be so great that you, like King David, will be willing to humbly and joyfully put God’s will and God’s way first in every phase of your life.

Our lesson today brings us to a very important chapter. It is a mountain peak of revelation. In it is recorded the Davidic Covenant, that upon David’s seed would “be built an unfailing king dom which eventually would emerge in the person of David’s greater Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. However, the part of the chapter for special consideration today has to do with the proposed building of the Lord’s house. Other con siderations in the chapter grow out of this proposal. David’s Expressed Desire 2 Sam. 7:1-3 David naturally was a man of activ ity. When one job was finished he was ready to begin another. At the time spoken of in these verses, the Lord had given him rest from the enemies round about. The Philistines had been put down. Other hostile tribes had been vanquished. Now what next? He quickly observes that the ark of God has no permanent dwelling place. He himself was dwelling in a comfortable house. It occurred to him that it was not right for the ark to remain in such an un substantial enclosure when he himself dwelt in luxury. In other words, he was dissatisfied with the present state of things. In his heart there was the de sire to build a worthy habitation for the ark of God. That God appreciated David’s desire is seen in 1 Kings 8:18 where God says, “ Thou didst well that it was in thine heart” to build an house for Me. Oft- times it is true that God accepts the attitude of the heart of His children in place of the actual thing contemplated. Sometimes God’s children desire things with a good motive which it is not God’s will to provide. God in such instances accepts the desires, but withholds the things themselves. David’s Desire Denied 2 Sam. 7:4-6 Nathan, the prophet, had expressed himself rather hastily in v. 3 to the effect that David’s desire would be granted, but that very night when in direct communion with God, Nathan was shown that though David’s idea was good, yet it was not within the divine will that David should build the temple. He is shown something more satisfying, however, to reveal unto David. He is shown that David will have a son who will fulfill his desires, that his dynasty shall not quickly come to an end as so many were prone to do in those times. Moreover, David’s house and his king dom “ shall be established forever” (v. 16). In other words, David was to bé the progenitor after the flesh of the Messianic kingdom. How often it is like this in God’s dealings with His children!
