A R C H E O LO G Y AND BIBLE HISTORY By Joseph P. Free This is a scholarly, up-to-date com pilation o f archeological discovery as it bears upon the Scripture and Bible history. The book is built around the entire historical narrative o f the Old Testa ment, four hundred silent years, and New Testament. Archeology is brought to bear upon the narrative where it illumines the text by reveal ing the historical background o f social customs, and in those places where it confirms the validity of the text in the face o f specific problems o f higher criticism. Matters o f chronology and supposed difficulties are dealt with in a careful and practical way. Archeology and Bible History is the outgrowth if Dr. Free’s course in archeology at Wheaton College. It is primarily an academic textbook, but it is so vveil indexed and documented and so clearly written that it also serves as an archeological reference work for pastors and laymen. Developments as recent as the dis covery of the Isaiah Manuscript in 1948 by the American School o f Ori ental Research in Jerusalem are in cluded. The documentary material in the footnotes and the bibliography are enough to give the careful reader an introduction to the main sources of archeological material. This work is complete, concise, sound, and read able. 398 pages. Van Kampen Press, Wheaton, 111. Cloth. Price $5.00. NOTES ON THE OLD TESTAMENT Job, Vol. I and II, by Albert Barnes This is a reprint o f a commen tary which has proved its value for almost one hundred years. Albert Barnes was pastor of the First Pres byterian Church in Philadelphia, and it was from there that Barnes’s Notes of the Old Testament were sent forth in 1870. This scholarly and conserva tive commentary is both meticulous and comprehensive. 363 and 339 pages. Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, Mich. Cloth. Price $6.00. The six sermons o f this book, deal ing with the annunciation, incarna tion, death, return, coronation, and invitation o f our Lord, are especially applicable at Christmas time. These messages are doctrinal, apologetic, and evangelistic. The appeal is to both the saved and the unsaved. 157 pages. Sword o f the Lord Publishers, Wheaton, 111. Cloth. Price $1.50.
