CELEBRATING PERSONAL CONNECTIONS The Senior Companion Program is a national volunteer program focused on connecting older adults 55+ with other older adults for social enrichment. Volunteers create meaningful social connections by providing friendly visits to clients actively served by PCOA and select community partners. Senior Companion volunteers make a difference by sharing their time and friendship. Senior Companion, Sheila Squyres, serves clients through Jewish Family and Children’s Services. She

joined the program, “To help others who were lonely just like I was.” In November, one of her clients was feeling down because Hannukah had started and visual impairment limited her ability to cook, one of the ways she celebrates the holidays. Sheila is from Louisiana

and loves to cook too. The client shared the significance for her of making latkes and Sheila shared her memories of potato pancakes. Sheila offered to help her client read her recipes and they showed each other how to make latkes and potato pancakes. “It was just girls in the kitchen having fun,” said Sheila, “but most importantly, she didn’t miss out on a tradition that held so much meaning for her.” Senior Companion, Sheila Squyres
