P reparation O ver P erfection THE SECRET INGREDIENT BEHIND SUCCESS

FEBRUARY 2025

We often fail to realize how much the act of preparation plays into our successes and wins. Take a moment to think back on your life. If you succeeded in school and graduated from college, you likely studied diligently to ensure you prepared yourself for tests, papers, and homework. When you get married, you may spend months or years preparing for the big day, making sure everything is as you imagined it. Yet, as we grow older, we start to ignore the difference preparation can make in our lives. We begin to attribute wins to luck more than anything else. Roman philosopher Seneca stated, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” I firmly believe in this philosophy. People may think others are lucky when, in reality, that individual has spent years working hard to become a world-class athlete, a renowned artist, or an inspiring business leader. If you think someone has had more luck than you, take a step back and analyze the situation further. There’s a good chance hard work and dedication are at the root of their success instead of just luck. While preparation can lead to success, I’m also aware we can’t be fully prepared for everything life throws our way. You can’t predict how or when an opportunity will present itself. You don’t know how your relationships will unfold or what your children’s futures will look like. There are all sorts of situations we cannot foresee, but that doesn’t mean you should just throw your hands in the

air and give up when things aren’t going your way. By focusing on the most important things in your life, you will better prepare yourself for the unpredictable. Over the years, I’ve worked with many clients who come into the consultation wanting to know the answers to just about everything. Unfortunately, many unknowns come into play we can’t necessarily predict. I would love to tell you how much your specific case will cost and how long things will take, but the factors that control these outcomes are out of our hands. We don’t know who the judge will be way in advance, what will need to be done, or whom your spouse will hire as their attorney. What’s really important is meeting with your attorney so we can start helping you make the right decisions for what comes next. It’s critical to trust your attorney to hold your hand and walk you through the process step by step. My team does this exceptionally well. We want nothing more than to take care of our clients, inform them about the next step, and give them control when possible. If you spend your life needing to know the future with certainty, you will be riddled with anxiety. It’s up to us to do what we’re supposed to do daily. If you trust the process, things will fall into place, even if it doesn’t feel that way in the moment.

BY FOCUSING ON THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS IN YOUR LIFE, YOU WILL BETTER PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE UNPREDICTABLE.”

Have you ever wished you had a personal assistant to help you stay on track and organize your life? Thanks to the latest in AI, you can have a sidekick in your pocket who knows all your long-term goals. Voice Notes AI is a handy app that allows you to record notes on anything from your stray thoughts, to-do lists, or ideas. It’s not just about giving you reminders — it’s a powerhouse for organizing your day, managing tasks, and even helping you brainstorm ideas. PENCIL IN YOUR PERFECT DAY Voice Notes AI is an intelligent way to plan your day and the tasks you need to complete. It will ensure you’re always in alignment with your long-term goals. Record your priorities, what you want to accomplish, and details about your life. Then, start your morning by asking your AI assistant to provide a plan for the day and give tips on what would help you get closer to your goals. The app then pulls information from your recordings and cross-references it with your calendar to create customized daily lists. T he F uture of P roductivity I s H ere AI THAT HELPS YOU PLAN, CREATE, AND THRIVE

TURN PHILOSOPHIES INTO PRODUCTIVITY To get even more personalized suggestions, you can teach your AI assistant about the philosophies, beliefs, and books that drive and inspire you. Next time you pick up a book or think about a mantra that moves you, record your thoughts using the app. Your digital assistant will consider that information and provide specific insights when you ask for daily to-dos or check in on your progress.

UPGRADE TO YOU 2.0 Your AI assistant can teach you about yourself and help you develop better habits. Once you have added several recordings to the app, ask it for a personality analysis as a fun way to learn how you think. You can also ask it to help you create an effective wind-down routine at the end of the day to help you for the rest of the week. Try making a “worry box” where you record concerns and ask your assistant to give suggestions on overcoming them.

W hy D ating B efore Y our D ivorce I s F inalized I s a B ad I dea BEFORE YOU DATE AGAIN Life is short. We want to have as many happy experiences as possible, but sometimes, a pending divorce can complicate our ability to live life to the fullest. With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, many individuals who are in the midst of a divorce wonder if they can and should date. The situation around dating while your divorce is pending is complicated, and the answer is probably not what you want to hear. Many states throughout the country allow for no-fault divorces, where no matter what happens, one spouse cannot be punished or blamed for the marriage’s deterioration. However, Georgia is not a no-fault divorce state. This means that a divorcing spouse can claim that the other spouse caused the failure of the marriage. Things like mental incapacity, impotence, imprisonment for more than two years, cruel treatment, habitual intoxication, and adultery are all grounds for a fault-based divorce. Georgia does not have legal separation, which means the state considers you married until your divorce is finalized. If you date while your divorce is pending, it is technically considered adultery, which, as stated above, is grounds for a fault-based divorce. By dating during your divorce, you are putting the entire proceedings at risk. While it might not significantly affect the actual divorce itself, you may see consequences related to alimony payments, child custody, and even parenting time, especially if your spouse claims you started a relationship or were living with your new partner while still technically married. While it might seem like dating is a great way to distract yourself from your pending divorce, doing so could lead to additional challenges later on. Instead, try to use this time to create new memories with your kids or explore a new hobby. There will be plenty of other Valentine’s Days in the future you can take advantage of! - Andrea Johnson

BUILD THOROUGH ESTATE PLANS WITH QTIP TRUSTS

T he B enefits of F orming a QTIP T rust SAFEGUARD YOUR LEGACY

Every family has a unique dynamic and history. If you have been married more than once, you may feel conflicted about the needs of your current spouse versus your children’s needs from previous marriages. However, you can preserve your legacy and provide for all your loved ones in your estate plan without alienating your children or spouse. By incorporating a Qualified Terminable Interest Property (QTIP) trust into your estate plan, you can solve the issue equitably, giving both parties the security they need. HOW QTIPS WORK Unlike other trusts, QTIP trusts allow you to name a life beneficiary and a final beneficiary for your property. For instance, you can name your spouse as your life beneficiary, who will have limited rights to use the property set aside in the trust during their lifetime. Then, you can name your children as the final beneficiaries, who will inherit the property in

the trust after you pass away. If your spouse passes away before you do, the property in the trust will be given directly to your final beneficiaries without needing alterations. QTIPs also offer benefits for a surviving spouse. Any income from the trust can go to the surviving spouse for the rest of their life, and estate taxes are not assessed until after the surviving spouse’s death. THE ADVANTAGES QTIPs are a great way to meet the needs of two conflicting parties of beneficiaries. It is ideal for people who have been married more than once and have children from previous marriages; few options offer such a flexible trust that allows your children to inherit your property after your living spouse no longer needs it. This can help ease tension and reduce disagreements when settling your estate.
