RICHARD HO has a special love for mail. His father worked as a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service for over thirty years, and he always brought home the coolest stamps. Richard is also the author of Red Rover: Curiosity on Mars , illustrated by Katherine Roy. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and children. As far as he knows, the Postal Service has never lost one of his packages. JESSICA LANAN wrote to her pen pal in Australia for over thirteen years and still loves to send packages and handwritten letters. She is a children’s book author and illustrator who created her first picture book at age eight. After graduating from college, she took a set of travel watercolors on a year-long trip around the world and inadvertently began her illustration career. She lives in Boulder, Colorado.

This week it is different. How does Henry feel about the change in the calendar? Is Henry excited about the parade? After “Katie got a kazoo”: What do you learn about Henry on this page? How does he feel about the musical instruments? After “But it is Share Time”: Why does Henry go to the school nurse? How are Henry’s thoughts and emotions affecting how his body feels? After “Henry marched out of the closet”: How do Henry and Samuel help each other? After Reading At the end of the book it says, “Henry found his own way. Just like always.” What does this mean? How does Henry find his own way? What does he do to take care of himself throughout the story? Henry, Like Always by Jenn Bailey

Auntie Luce’s Talking Paintings A young Haitian American girl reminisces about traveling to Haiti to visit her Auntie Luce, a painter. The two discuss Haiti’s history as well as the things that make Haiti home. (English with some Haitian Creole words) Chloé gets nervous before tests, even when she knows the answers! Chloé works with her dad to find ways to help her calm down before her next test. Estrès ak Egzamen Òtograf / Spelling Test Stress

TRY THIS! Imagine you could give Chloé some test advice. What would you like to tell her? How would your advice help Chloé? Let’s talk about it.

READING TOGETHER Here are a few tips to help you and your child explore and enjoy these books. Get Ready. Make reading time a special time together. Prepare by first looking through the book to get a sense of what it is like. Sit comfortably and if you can, share the book so both you and your child can see each page. Share the Reading. You may want to take turns as you read the book. Pause occasionally to explain a new word in English or Haitian Creole, or to share ideas about what is happening in the book. Talk About It. In addition to using the Try This! tip for each book, encourage your child to share favorite parts from each story. You can talk about a book right after reading—but sometimes it is fun to talk about it later with another family member or friend, or when something on TV or in your lives reminds you of the book.

colors, symbols, or designs would you include? Why?
As a Haitian American, I found it difficult to find books to share with my children where they could see themselves in the pages. The books in this pack celebrate Haitian/Haitian American culture and are fun to read. I can’t wait for you to experience them, too. Jamie Hector
