La Universidad Católica de Chile en conjunto con el Consejo de la Cultura y el co-financiamiento del Fondart llamaron a concurso de Anteproyectos para el diseño del nuevo edificio, a construirse en el enclave del Campus Lo Contador.
The Catholic University of Chile and the Council for Culture with co-financing from Fondart (National Arts Foundation), called for tender a Project Competition for the design of the new building in an enclave on the Lo Contador Campus.
Ubicado en el barrio Pedro de Valdivia Norte, las propuestas para el nuevo edificio debían asumir la definición residencial de este sector a los pies del Cerro San Cristóbal, donde predominan las construcciones de un piso. El jurado valoró la “fineza” del proyecto que obtuvo el primer lugar, obra del equipo liderado por el arquitecto Gonzalo Claro, que logró ir más allá de la estrategia: “(…) no solo eleva el auditorio dotando a todo el campus e incluso al barrio de un nuevo espesor, de un horizonte inédito; la gracia es que lo hace sobre un volumen de 2 niveles, sobre una plataforma baja que permite que haya relación entre este nuevo nivel y el suelo del campus”. El jurado fue dirigido por Hugo Mondragón y presidido por Alejandro Aravena, e incluyó también a Cazú Zegers, Francisco Chateau, José Cruz, Alberto Montelegre, Camilo Restrepo, José María Sáez, Juan Agustín Soza, Marcelo von Chrismar, Mario Ubilla y el rector de la PUC, Ignacio Sánchez. Se buscaban propuestas que lograran articular la vida del campus en el barrio y proponer nuevas dimensiones para lo que representa y representará la educación de la arquitectura.
Located in the Pedro de Valdivia Norte neighborhood, the proposals for the new building were to take into consideration the residential definition of this area at the foot of San Cristobal Hill, of mainly one-story buildings. The jury appreciated the "refinement" of the project that won the first place, the work of the team led by architect Gonzalo Claro, which managed to go beyond the strategy: "... it not only raises the auditorium providing the entire campus –and even the neighborhood– with a new thickness, a fresh horizon; the merit comes from doing it on a two-level volume, over a low platform which connects this new level with the campus ground level". The jury was directed by Hugo Mondragón and composed by Alejandro Aravena as president, Cazú Zegers, Francisco Chateau, José Cruz, Alberto Montealegre, Camilo Restrepo, José María Sáez, Juan Agustín Soza, Marcelo von Chrismar, Mario Ubilla and Ignacio Sánchez, rector of the Catholic University. The proposals were to articulate the life of the campus in the neighbourhood and propose new dimensions to what architecture education represents now and in the future.

La propuesta responde a las necesidades de escala del campus con un proyecto de escala doméstica, sumándose a las casas existentes que constituyen el borde sur de la Escuela de Arquitectura. The proposal responds to the specific needs of the campus with a project of domestic scale that complements the existing houses that make up the southern border of the School of Architecture.
