San Luis Park is an urban planning project, one whose most outstanding feature is its location within the urban area. The plot has 180 hectares. A void surrounded by the consolidated city. From here on we are presented with a series of positive features, with no option but to gather them and give them the life they claimed for. The given urban facts: The site is spread over 2 km along Kennedy Avenue starting from Americo Vespucio Avenue, the city ring road. To the south, the Golf Club borders Presidente Riesco Street. Its extension through the site proposes an alternative avenue of great significance between Kennedy and Apoquindo avenues. The axis of Manquehue Avenue crosses through a little above the center of the site. An inner axis for the eastern district of the city appears perfectly drawn from Bilbao to the river. It is designed to receive the Civic Center of the eastern district. The Alonso de Córdova diagonal from the Americo Vespucio/Kennedy node to Manquehue and Los Militares street marks the southern limit of the site. Consequently, existing structural axes and other first order traffic-ways define this huge space. This amazing place reveals the secret of Santiago: the Mapocho valley with its magnificent mountain range horizon. In the background, the snow-covered El Plomo hill, a milestone that represents the Andes, a continental system. To the southeast, the chain of red rocks that separates the gullies of the Mapocho and Maipo rivers, which build the valley in successive sedimentary layers. And on the north side, the Manquehue chain dominates throughout the length of Kennedy Avenue. These large-scale natural elements of the context bestow their dignity on this Unique Place. Incredibly, the surrounding city ignores this. It simply doesn’t see it! With its small-scale garden city setting, everything that is built, planted and traced is made to hide these incalculable assets. Could it be because the people do not resist the power of this beauty?
Parque San Luis es un proyecto de urbanismo, uno cuya mayor característica es su ubicación excepcional dentro del radio urbano. Es un terreno de 180 has. Un vacío rodeado de ciudad constituida. De aquí en adelante se presentan una sucesión de regalos, solo cabía recogerlos y darles la vida que reclamaban. Los hechos urbanos regalados: El terreno se extiende en 2 km a lo largo de Av. Kennedy a partir de Américo Vespucio, cinturón intercomunal. Al sur, el Club de Golf limita con calle Presidente Riesco. Su prolongación a través del terreno propone una avenida alternativa de gran poder entre Kennedy y Apoquindo. Un poco más arriba del centro del terreno atraviesa el eje de Avenida Manquehue. Y se constituye un eje interior del área oriente perfectamente trazado desde Bilbao hasta el río. Está trazado para recibir el Centro Cívico del sector Oriente. La diagonal Alonso de Córdova desde el nudo de Américo Vespucio con Kennedy hasta Manquehue por los Militares es el borde sur del terreno. De tal modo, este enorme espacio está trazado por ejes estructurantes existentes y otras circulaciones de primera magnitud. Este sorprendente lugar revela el secreto de Santiago: el valle del Mapocho con su magnífico horizonte cordillerano. Al fondo, el nevado del Plomo, hito que representa Los Andes, un sistema continental. Hacia el sureste, la cadena de rocas rojas que separa el cajón del Mapocho del cajón del Maipo, los ríos que construyen el valle por sucesivas capas sedimentarias. Y por el costado norte, la cadena del Manquehue dominando a lo largo de toda Avenida Kennedy. Estos hechos de un entorno natural a gran escala regalan su dignidad a este Lugar Único. Increíblemente la ciudad que lo rodea lo ignora, ¡simplemente no lo ve! Con su configuración de ciudad jardín a pequeña escala, todo lo construido, lo plantado, lo trazado, está realizado para ocultar estos bienes incalculables. ¿Será porque sus habitantes no resisten la fuerza de esta belleza?
