El tema central de nuestra revista, destinado a los arquitectos chilenos de la modernidad, aborda al arquitecto Miguel Eyquem Astorga (1922) con un artículo denominado “El Juego de la Invención”, elaborado por los arquitectos Diego Elton y Nicolás Tironi con la intervención de Javier Correa. A pesar de conocer su compromiso con la Escuela de la Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, de su trabajo en equipo y de su labor docente, el artículo buscó destacar la arquitectura personal de Eyquem. Hay conceptos importantes que se destacan en su obra y en su personalidad como arquitecto y que se reflejan en su frase “mi vida es de overol y herramientas en la mano, soy un maestro de obra y profesor por accidente”. Es notable su búsqueda de la invención, la libertad, la economía y la sencillez de su arquitectura, pilares fundamentales para la sustentabilidad. En el artículo, es el propio Eyquem quien explica sus proyectos. Conversamos con el arquitecto catalán Rafael Aranda, socio de la oficina RCR Arquitectes, que opera local e internacionalmente desde el pequeño pueblo de Olot en las cercanías de Barcelona. Su oficina es creadora de sorprendentes obras surgidas del replanteamiento profundo y original de los conceptos básicos que difunde cada proyecto. Destacamos obras como el conjunto de Les Cols, el Faro de Punta Aldea y el edificio Plaça Europa en España y un hotel en Dubai, de magnífica concepción. En cuanto a Concursos, en esta edición mostramos cinco certámenes de diferentes características: el Edificio Docente de la Facultad de Arquitectura PUC en Lo Contador; el XXVII Concurso CAP para alumnos de Arquitectura, un referente tanto por su continuidad como por el interés que despierta; el concurso CORMA, también para estudiantes; Electrolux-Fensa Mademsa, para profesionales y para alumnos; y el cuarto concurso YAP-Constructo 2013, auspiciado por el MOMA de Nueva York. Asimismo, también publicamos nueve proyectos de oficinas asociadas, destacando la habilitación de la nueva sede de la AOA realizada por la oficina de Osvaldo Fuenzalida y Jorge Swinburn; se suman los cuatro proyectos consignados en la sección Obras Recibidas y que en el futuro podrían ser destacados.
Finalmente, recordamos a dos grandes arquitectos fallecidos recientemente: Alberto Cruz Covarrubias y Christian de Groote Córdova.
The central topic of our magazine, focused on Chilean architects of the modern movement, reports on architect Miguel Eyquem Astorga (1922) in an article called “The Game of the Invention”, prepared by architects Diego Elton and Nicolás Tironi with contributions by Javier Correa. Despite knowing about his commitment to the School of the Catholic University of Valparaiso, his teamwork and his teaching, the article sought to highlight Eyquem’s personal architecture. Important concepts are essential in his work and in his personality as an architect and are expressed in his phrase “my life is in overalls and with tools in hand, I am a builder and a teacher by accident”. His search for invention, freedom, economy and the simplicity of his architecture is remarkable, identifying fundamental pillars for sustainability. In the article, it is Eyquem himself who explains his projects. We spoke with Catalan architect Rafael Aranda, partner of the RCR Arquitectes office, which operates locally and internationally from the small town of Olot near Barcelona. His office is creating amazing works emerging from deep and original rethinking of the basic concepts that are expressed in each project. The featured works are the Les Cols complex, the Punta Aldea Lighthouse and the Plaça Europa building in Spain and a hotel in Dubai with a magnificent conception. As for competitions, in this issue we present five contests with different characteristics: the Faculty Building of the School of Architecture PUC at Lo Contador Campus, the XXVII CAP Competition for students of Architecture, a reference both for its continuity and rising interest; the CORMA competition, also for students; Electrolux-Fensa Mademsa, for professionals and students, and the fourth YAP-Constructo 2013 competition, sponsored by New York’s MOMA.
Furthermore, we also publish nine projects by associated offices, highlighting the new headquarters for the AOA by the office of Osvaldo Fuenzalida and Jorge Swinburn, plus the four projects in the Received Works section that in the future could become renowned.
Finally, we remember two great architects, Alberto Cruz Covarrubias and Christian De Groote Córdova, recently deceased.
