Fernando Marín: Analicemos el ‘concepto’ en arquitectura. Lo que hacemos habitualmente los arquitectos es arquitecturizar un concepto y convertirlo en un edificio. Pero RCR no construye un edificio en base a un concepto, sino que construye ese concepto. - Es que lo que se quiere crear es un LUGAR. Y atención a esta reflexión: nuestros espacios se activan con la persona, necesitan a la persona para ser. Hay mucho edificio y mucha arquitectura que no la necesita para definirse y existir, en cambio a nuestros espacios son las personas las que los hacen vivir y dan sentido. Tú no entiendes la Casa Entremuros si no ves a las personas moverse allí. Nuestros lugares, intencionalmente, quieren ser una abstracción de la naturaleza, son paisajes que se activan con sus habitantes. El edificio de Plaça Europa se reconoce como edificio de oficinas por las personas, si no sería solo paisaje. CAU: ¿Por qué escogieron Olot para montar su oficina? - Terminamos de estudiar Arquitectura en Barcelona el año 87 y ya entonces tomamos la decisión de volver al lugar donde habíamos nacido: Olot, una pequeña ciudad de Girona, a una hora y media de Barcelona. Hasta nuestros profesores nos sentenciaron, si nos íbamos a Olot no haríamos arquitectura, trabajaríamos con un promotor o un constructor y ya está. Lo usual era quedarse en Barcelona y emplearse en algún estudio de alguien más o menos famoso. Pero resulta que nosotros nunca hemos trabajado con nadie, ni en ningún despacho. Lo que sí hicimos fue creer en nosotros y creer en algo que siempre ponemos arriba de la mesa, que es la creatividad compartida. Haciendo nuestras las palabras del escritor Marina, la creatividad compartida es la unión de personas comunes que juntas logran hacer cosas extraordinarias. Es en base a esto que ya llevamos 25 años y hemos trasladado la creatividad compartida a todos nuestros colaboradores. Nos gusta este concepto de la Bauhaus y de creatividad global, que va de hacer una revista, un azucarero o una pieza de arquitectura. No importa el tema, nos gusta entender esta variedad y por eso nos encontramos a gusto en cualquier escala. El mensaje que damos a la gente joven: no importa la dimensión del trabajo, podéis llegar a hacer sentir, explicar y provocar con una pequeña pieza. Por el contrario, no creo que los grandes edificios lleguen a emocionar mucho.
Fernando Marín: Let’s analyze the ‘concept’ in architecture. What we architects often do is architecturize a concept and turn it into a building. But RCR does not build a building based on a concept, but rather builds the concept itself. - The thing is, you want to create a PLACE. Let’s pay attention to this thought: our spaces are activated by people; they require a person to exist. There are plenty of buildings and so much architecture that does not need a person to be defined and to exist, however in our spaces people give them life and sense. You do not understand the Entremuros House if you don’t see people move in it. Our places intentionally want to be an abstraction of nature; they are landscapes that are activated by their inhabitants. The Plaça Europa building is recognized as an office building by people, otherwise it would simply be landscape. CAU: Why did you choose Olot to establish your office? - We finished our architecture studies in Barcelona in ‘87 and by then we had already decided to go back to where we were born: Olot, a town in Girona, an hour and a half from Barcelona. Even our teachers sentenced us, if we left for Olot we would not make architecture, we would work with a developer or contractor and that would be it. The usual thing was to stay in Barcelona and find employment in a studio with someone more or less famous. It turns out that we have never worked with anyone or in any studio. What we did was believe in ourselves and believe in something that we always put on the table, which is shared creativity. By making our own the words of the writer Marina, shared creativity is the union of ordinary people achieving extraordinary things together. It is on this basis that we’ve been going on for already 25 years and we have transferred shared creativity to all our contributors. We like this Bauhaus concept of overall creativity that goes from creating a magazine, a sugar pot or a piece of architecture. The theme does not matter, we like to understand this variety and so we are at home in any scale. The message we give to young people: no matter the size of the job, you can get to inspire a feeling, explain and provoke with a small piece. On the contrary, I don’t think large buildings are too moving.
