A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 13

On Tuesday this week we were delighted to welcome parents and carers of the Year 13 students to our Information Evening. At this event, Mr Bannister outlined the different post-18 options for students, including the path to University and UCAS applications, as well as information for alternative further education and qualification paths such as degree apprenticeships. Furthermore, he reminded the parents and carers of the available pastoral support to the students, as well as of our expectations with regards to attendance and punctuality. On Wednesday, a number of Year 13 students took part in the Sixth Form Borough Netball Tournament hosted at Waldegrave. Well done to everyone who took part! This week, as part of the A Level Geography course, students have now started collecting their data as part of the NEA coursework. Waldegrave’s proximity to the world city of London gives our students a unique chance to explore real-world physical and human geography, within a vibrant and ever-changing urban setting. They visited Battersea Power station as a case study of regeneration of an area and also Brixton as a case study of area gentrification. The Geography students will continue their data collection next week in Bushy Park. I am certain that they have found the process extremely helpful and inspiring. Students need to continue to work on their UCAS application. As a reminder the early submission deadline is on 15th October, but students are expected to have submitted them to the school at least a week before the deadline to allow us sufficient time to check these before we submit them to Universities. Have a lovely weekend!

MR STAVROU, HEAD OF YEAR 13

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘A Room of one’s own’ by Virginia Woolf ‘A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction’ This poetically powerful extended essay takes readers on a journey through the history of feminine writers, as we witness first hand the barriers structural inequality placed in the path of the female sex. Wolfe encourages us to ensure the lost literary gifts of the feminine past can live on in the rooms we can call our own. This cornerstone of feminist liter- ature beautifully explores the immense power of personal and feminist interpretation, which cannot be recreated by males with complete literary freedom and space. Woolf’s examination of the patriarchal bookshelves, which leave no room for female narrative voices, ignites a desire to shine a light upon the women who damaged the locks males placed on literary conventions, finally enabling women to write fiction in a room of their own without interruption. Reading this will transform how you perceive the role of the female voice in literature today. - Z Maloney, 13TRO
