El encargo del proyecto de la iglesia y la reformulación del Plan Rector original
The commissioning of the project for the church and the revision of the original Master Plan How was the commission to revise the original Master Plan and address the church project presented years later? What were the difficulties of taking responsibility, considering your monastic status and not having a professional degree? - Ten years into my admission, during which I studied philosophy for two years and theology for four, the possibility of building the church presented itself thanks to a major grant. Jaime Bellalta had then gone to England with his wife, Esmee Cromie, a remarkable landscape designer, and in 1958 my architecture classmate Gabriel Guarda had entered the monastery. Then the Prior, father Adalberto Metzinger, consulted with us the possibility that we both undertake the project. My response was that Jaime being absent what needed to be done was to request a project to the Institute of Architecture of Valparaiso. This was done, and they presented a work that changed Jaime’s concept fundamentally. Since the community did not approve, the commission fell on us. For me it was something impossible, I felt incapable of such a challenge: to continue the work of Jaime with a bar he had set so high. Also, because I had left the profession to devote myself to the monastic duty, which in many respects would be interrupted, fearing at the same time the critique from my architect peers and my own community. Therefore I insisted I would not participate, until one day I noticed that Gabriel installed a drawing board, ordered tracing paper, a T square, pencils... I felt at a tremendous crossroads, either continue standing by or join in. I decided upon the latter. Although it felt like a great irresponsibility, in our Benedictine rule the prime rule is obedience to the superior. The architectural references Which were the references at the beginning of the project? What influence did international architects like Le Corbusier - of huge media impact at the time - exert, or in our environment, the works of Alberto Cruz and the Institute of Architecture of Valparaíso, with their chapel in Pajaritos? ¿Cómo se planteó el encargo, años después, de reformular el Plan Rector original y encarar el proyecto de la iglesia? ¿Cuáles fueron las dificultades de asumir la responsabilidad, considerando su condición monacal y el hecho de no haberse titulado? - A 10 años de mi ingreso, durante los cuales estudié dos años de filosofía y cuatro de teología, gracias a una donación importante se planteó la posibilidad de edificar la iglesia. Para entonces Jaime Bellalta se había ido a Inglaterra con su esposa, Esmee (Cromie), paisajista notable, y en 1958 había entrado al monasterio mi compañero en Arquitectura Gabriel Guarda. Entonces el Prior, Padre Adalberto Metzinger, nos consultó la posibilidad de que ambos asumiéramos el proyecto. Mi respuesta fue que al no estar Jaime correspondía pedir un anteproyecto al Instituto de Arquitectura de Valparaíso. Así se hizo, y presentaron un trabajo que cambiaba fundamentalmente el partido de Jaime. Como la comunidad no lo aprobó, recayó sobre nosotros el encargo. Para mí era algo imposible, me sentía incapaz de tamaño desafío: continuar la obra de Jaime con la altura de vara que había dejado. Además, porque yo había abandonado la profesión para dedicarme a la tarea monástica, que en varios aspectos iba a quedar interrumpida, temiendo de paso la crítica de mis compañeros arquitectos y la de mi propia comunidad. Por consiguiente, insistí en no participar hasta que un día noté que Gabriel instalaba una mesa de dibujo, hacía comprar papel mantequilla, regla T, lápices… Me sentí en una tremenda encrucijada, seguir al margen o integrarme. Decidí esto último. Aunque lo sentía como una gran irresponsabilidad, según nuestra regla benedictina lo que prima es la obediencia al superior. Los referentes arquitectónicos ¿Cuáles fueron los referentes al iniciar el proyecto? ¿Qué influencia ejercieron arquitectos internacionales como Le Corbusier, de enorme impacto comunicacional en ese momento, o en nuestro medio las obras de Alberto Cruz y del Instituto de Arquitectura de Valparaíso, con su capilla de Pajaritos? ¿El proyecto de Jaime Bellalta fue un referente importante?
