Other scrambles may be scheduled during the season when play dates are available. All ANCC members are welcome regardless of their handicap. 2025 ANCC Men’s “B” Team & Qualifying Dates
The ANCC Men’s “B” Team competition begins late April and is a great way to meet other ANCC members and play competitive golf against other clubs in the area. The ‘B’ Team is open to all men with course handicaps ranging from 5 to 16. Matches are held on Saturdays and/ or Sundays from late April thru late July (8 matches total) with playoffs held from August thru October. Signups for both tryout dates will begin 1 March 2025. Although you do not need to compete in both tryout dates (we take the best score from either round), however, it is recommended to try to compete in both as to increase your chances of making the team. Tryouts will be held on Saturday, 29 March at FFX, and on Sunday, 6 April at ARL. I have checked the local school spring break calendars to limit conflicts in scheduling and made sure nobody will miss any Masters action as well! For more ANCC ‘B’ Team information click here or contact Tom Gwilliam at thomasgwilliam@yahoo.com. 2025 Try Out Dates (tee times starting at/around 1200):
29 March 2025 at Fairfax 6 April 2025 at Arlington
Don’t miss out on a great experience competing against other country clubs and playing a variety of local courses. If you are 50 or older and retired from at least one occupation, you are eligible to join the league. ANCC fields two separate teams which are very competitive in league play -- one at Arlington and one at Fairfax. Both teams are always looking for new players. During the season the Arlington team will play 12 other teams both home and away for a 24-match season. The Fairfax team will play 10 other teams both home and away for a 20-match season. The League’s season runs from early April through early October. Play is on Thursday mornings and is four-ball match play with a 3-point Nassau, combined with a sweepstakes competition. We use handicaps in all matches and our team members have handicap indexes ranging from the single digits through the mid-thirties. As a team member, you will be assigned to play in at least a third of our matches during the season and may volunteer to play any matches to which you are not assigned. The home club provides practice balls and waives green fees. The home club also provides morning pastries, coffee, and a buffet lunch afterwards. The 2025 Army-Navy teams will be put together within the next few months and eligible ANCC members can sign up for either team. Visit the teams ’web pages on the ANCC website for signup instructions. Signups are open from now until 31 January 2025 for the Arlington Team and until 1 March 2025 for the Fairfax Team. The pages for the two teams can be found on the ANCC web site under Golf, ANCC Golf Organizations & Teams, Men’s Groups. Q & A with Jean-Marc: Q: What do you like most about working at ANCC? A: I am inspired by my team every day and enjoy working alongside them. I also enjoy playing trick shots every so often. Q: What do you like most about coaching tennis? A: Watching players develop and reach their goals is really rewarding for me and I am really grateful for the bonds that I have formed with those I teach. Q: Who is your favorite professional tennis player, and why? A: Roger Federer - he is half South African, so I always felt a connection to that, and I appreciate how graceful and easy he makes the game of tennis look.
FEATURED “PRO OF THE MONTH” — JEAN-MARC KRONE Jean-Marc Goncalves Krone’s journey in tennis began in Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where he was raised before moving to England with his family. Inspired by watching matches at his local tennis club, Jean-Marc quickly developed a passion for the sport, which soon translated into playing and competing himself. He launched his coaching career at Winchester Racquet Club as a part-time assistant coach, instructing players of all levels while competing in tournaments across Europe. By the end of high school, he was ranked 63rd in the U.K. Men’s rankings. Pursuing his love for tennis, Jean-Marc attended Campbell University on a Division I scholarship and later transferred to the University of Northwestern Ohio on an NAIA scholarship. There, he achieved national recognition, ranking 11th in doubles and helping his team secure a 4th-place national ranking in the NAIA. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, he began his professional career as a Tennis Professional at the Siasconset Casino Association in Massachusetts before joining ANCC in 2017. Outside of ANCC, Jean-Marc remains an active competitor in the USTA Men’s 5.0 League, where his team qualified for Nationals in 2024.
Q: In your own game, what is your favorite shot to hit? A: My favorite shot is the tweener, as many know.
Tennis Tip from Jean-Marc: Tennis players aiming for professional growth should focus on mastering footwork and court positioning, as these form the foundation of any successful game. Regularly practicing mental toughness and staying composed under pressure are essential for perform- ing at a high-level during matches. Developing a well-rounded game by improving strokes, serves, and volleys ensures adaptability against different oppo- nents. Remember, greatness isn’t achieved overnight— stay persistent, trust the process, and let your passion for the game drive you to new heights!
