Second trip to Europe: a transforming learning experience
In parallel he studied painting, photography and singing in Vienna, and connected with urban planners, architects, musicians, painters and sculptors from all over Europe. During his stay he also coincides with his colleagues Juan Martínez and Roberto Dávila. From Vienna and with the support of his teachers, he participates in the competition for the Chile Pavilion in Sevilla (1928), with a proposal that already reflected the modern influence of the Austrian masters. The competition was finally won by Juan Martínez. On a third trip to Europe, between 1937 and 1938, he deepened and perfected his urban planning studies. He served on a mission for the Ministry of Public Works, and arranged the recruitment of Professor Karl Brunner for a second time. During this trip he met with friends Luis Muñoz Maluschka, architect and urban planner, painter Israel Roa and sculptor Samuel Román, sharing experiences and the new knowledge he would later apply in Chile.
In 1927 he embarks on a second trip to Europe, spending two years traveling through countries and visiting exhibitions and art centers of the big cities. He studies modern architecture in the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, in the workshop led by masters Clemens Holzmeister and Peter Behrens; he has the opportunity of meeting master teachers Adolf Loos and Joseph Hoffman, he attends the Urban Planning seminar by Karl Brunner and enrolls in the post graduate course Introduction to Urban Planning by Professor O. Iltz. During this time he visits the “Weissenhoff Siedlung”, the second housing exhibition of the Deutscher Werkbund in Stuttgart, opened in Germany in 1927. There he walked through and studied each of the works in the exhibition, which for the first time had brought together the finest masters of European modernism, such as Le Corbusier, Mies Van der Rohe, Walter Gropius and Peter Behrens. The exhibition reflected the architecture of the interwar period, strongly emphasizing minimal housing.
