EDITOR’S NOTE
What ’ s in your heart?
W
HEN I WAS A CHILD, WE spent every Christmas at my grandparents’ house with my extended family. My grandma and grandpa loved the holidays
and worked hard to make them special. My grandpa made me and my sisters matching t-shirts, made everyone flannel pajamas, baked up a storm, bought too many gifts, and decorated beautifully. She even hung tiny little glass ornaments on invisible strings from her ceiling. Everyone loved it and, as they swayed with every small breeze, it was magical. That’s really what this season is all about–magical in every sense. It makes your heart fluffier and of course--a flattering feeling. This issue, we take every consideration by heart, on how we want to make this issue if not memorable, exceptional in every page as we want to help you have fun this season. And this holiday season, let’s get inspired by author Sally Green and how she transforms her life by putting her heart to where it should be. Now I ask you, dear readers, what’s in your heart?

CHRISTMAS COMBO Elevate your holidays with something other than red and green.
by Hadley Keller

1. BURGUNDY AND COPPER Riff on the tried and true Christmas red with a more subdued burgundy, like designer Kelly Deck did in the festive home of Kimberly Jones, where bronze and copper accents ground the space and give an elegant look paired with fresh greenery. 2. BLUE AND GREEN Sky blue also pairs beautifully with pine green, as Matthew Bees proves in his Charleston home here. Swap out red bows for blue and give your Christmas decor an unexpected jolt—and an appropriately coastal vibe if you’re by the ocean. 3. WINTER WHITES For a more ethereal look, channel snow- capped mountains in a white scene with touches of silver and gold, like Joanna Buchanan did with this table setup. 4. BLACK AND GOLD Designer Beth Webb gave her Christmas decor a minimal overhaul, trimming down the palette to black, white, and metallics for an elegant look that transcends seasons.
5. PINK With the onset of Barbiecore, there couldn’t be a more perfect time to look to pink for Christmas color inspiration. Vintage ornaments offer a great opportunity to incorporate shades from pastel to Pepto Bismol. The best part? You can leave them up right through Valentine’s Day! 6. BLUE AND WHITE House Beautiful loves a blue and white moment—and that’s no different at Christmas. Take the classic color scheme into the holidays by creating a themed tree, as designer Jenny Wolf did here. 7. RED AND PURPLE For a bold take on holiday decor, pair deep red with a rich purple. Here, Mally Skok displays antique red glassware against a red- and-purple wallpaper, a color scheme that would be beautiful for a Christmas table. 8. SILVER AND SAGE Set a moody vibe that carries into New Years with a palette of grays, silvers, and sage hues, like One Kings Lane founder Susan Feldman did on this table, which draws its palette from the showstopping centerpiece.

ASHION AND ART HAVE ALWAYS been closely intertwined, and it’s always interesting to see how artists interpret the codes of a fashion house in collaborations. Louis Vuitton’s Artycapucines Collection takes this further by commissioning six artists — Amélie Bertrand, Daniel Buren, Peter Marino, Park Seo-Bo, Ugo Rondinone, and Kennedy Yanko — to create wearable art on a specific canvas: the Capucines bag. In the talented hands of these leading contemporary artists, the iconic bag takes on wildly different looks. Spanning the global art scene, this limited-edition drop features the works of Daniel Buren, Kennedy Yanko, Park Seo-Beo, Amélie Bertrand, Peter Marino, and Ugo Rondinone. The six leading contemporary artists bring their unique vision to interpret the Capucines bag range with exceptional savoir faire. From 3D printed leather, paintings recreated through the use of textured and embellished calfskin, to a striking hand-sprayed creation that gleamed with phosphorescence, this season’s artists proved the Capucines’ ability to inspire unbridled creativity.

The bag is artfully crumpled, but it’s still functional. It has a removable handle and a pouch underneath that functions as a sleeve so that you can carry the bag as a clutch. For the fourth installment of its artist partnerships, Louis Vuitton unveils a new chapter of the artist-designed ArtyCapucines collection. Inspired by the iconic Rue Des Capucines, the Capucines’ distinct rhombus silhouette and arc-shaped top handle make a the perfect blank canvas for contemporary artists.

A young client tapped designer Jason Arnold to transform a home into a moody retreat where nothing is precious but everything is beautiful... EQUESTRIAN’S ECLECTIC
by Heidi Mitchell photography Haris Kenjar
I
N A LEAFY AND HISTORIC neighborhood of Nashville, one young equestrian—who splits her time between Florida
and Tennessee—has found her perfect pied-à-terre. That’s in large part thanks to Jason Arnold, the Nashville-based interior designer known for creating a sense of balance in his consistently refined interiors. “Young, fresh, timeless, and classic was what she wanted,” Arnold recalls of his client. “She has a dog, and she comes home [right] after riding, so making sure everything was durable was also important.” What made the whole thing work, the designer adds, is that the client trusted him to do what he does best—mix up old and new, inherited and purchased, elegant and fun. Though his client didn’t have the exact words to describe what she wanted, Arnold intuited she was drawn to a layered look. And he delivered. In the living room, the Hickory Chair reupholstered by Rubelli fabric is new, while the Mini Skirt drinks table by Bunny Williams Home is a

classic. The Lucite tables are vintage, and the Visual Comfort brass-and-leather- wrapped floor lamp, with a triangle shade, is an antique. The furnishings give that room and all the others a fresh feeling of having been collected over time. “I threw in several items throughout the home that were handed down from her grandmother, who had amazing taste and style,” Arnold adds. In the guest bedroom, geometric and almost floral Zak + Fox wallcoverings offset the owner’s grandmother’s dresser and a vibrant blue bedspread. There’s a quirky Pierre Paulin tongue chair in the den and a very grown-up Phillip Jeffries wallcovering to temper the small space. In the dining room, Arnold took a Broad Beach pendant wrapped in rope and placed it above a custom—if Lilliputian— dining table that seats just six. “She’s not a huge entertainer, but friends come and hang out, and she does work at the dining room table sometimes,” Arnold says. “The chandelier provides this honey glow that makes everyone look gorgeous.” For the primary bedroom, he had a Birmingham manufacturer create a custom four- poster iron bed, placed it atop an

Antrim geometric rug, then filled out the space with Lee Industries armchairs reupholstered in royal blue Weitzner fabric. They finished the room with a custom dresser that looks like something the equestrian’s grandmother passed down, as does the Bhawana nightstand which Arnold sourced from Global Views. Framed prints, urns, curious lamps, and unexpected curios sit on nearly every surface in the bedroom and throughout the two-bedroom apartment. These one of a kind objets give the owner “I think this home tells the story of a well-traveled, eclectic, interesting young woman with sophisticated taste, but who is also playful and enjoys being surrounded by beautiful things. The strong architectural bones allow for that, and I love the way it turned out...” something new to marvel at every time she walks in the door, Arnold notes, especially since she’s only there part-time. “I love smaller spaces, and when you have a great base, then layering all these pieces can really tell the story,” Arnold says. “I think this home tells the story of a well-traveled, eclectic, interesting young woman with sophisticated taste, but who is also playful and enjoys being surrounded by beautiful things. The strong architectural bones allow for that, and I love the way it turned out.” It’s eclectic and unbridled, just like its owner. EC

SALLY BREEZE GREEN
For this month’s issue, let’s get to know more about the beautiful story written by the author herself Sally Breeze Green.
RITING THINGS DOWN has been in my blood since early childhood when my mother gave me a 5-year for 5 years too small for my thoughts so it became a 1-year diary, writing whole pages at a time. It became a way of therapy for me when my parents divorced and Dad left home. My search to find a ‘Father’ replacement which began on paper drove me to seeking a real-life relationship in other males in my life W diary. It gave me a chance to scribble a few lines, secrets and thoughts that I wanted to remember. Then came another 5-year diary and I found the five spaces
After a year in college, God brought the man of my dreams into my life and we married. During these early years of marriage, I continued to ‘jot down’ short writings, but my writing began in earnest in the 1960’s as I pounded out my life story In Search of Wholeness on an old Underwood upright typewriter. God added two sons to complete our family and it was a busy life, but underneath lay that anxiety of abandonment by my father. When Billy Graham came to Southern California, I found myself involved with prayer preparation for the crusade. I’d gone down the aisle of a Baptist Vacation Bible School in the
only to find that they all had ‘clay feet’. This evolved into searching for God as I attended a parochial school in my childhood. If I couldn’t have my earthly Dad, perhaps I could find my Heavenly Father! By the time high school came along, I was adept at ‘jotting down’ my thoughts and ideas so writing themes and essays and book reports came easy. English was my favorite subject and sharing my thoughts on paper continued to be a way of therapy for me. Little did I realize at the time that the words of an old hymn were very true in my life, Behind the dim unknown stands God watching over His own.

COVER STORY
4th grade and now I found myself going down to the Angel Stadium floor to once again give myself away to the God I didn’t know. In learning about prayer for the Crusade, I became intrigued and out of it came the seeds for my next writing experience, In Quest of Prayer. Billy Graham’s books were instrumental in building my faith and when I read World Aflame, I encountered the hidden God again. As the days flew by, I became part of a study group on prayer at a local church which led me to a breakthrough in my search for God. I had a Theophany of Jesus! His bright Spirit of Presence engulfed me in an embrace of warm love and the Bible came alive! In it, I found the Heavenly Father I’d been searching for! This Heavenly Father wasn’t going to abandon me and eventually, He healed me of my anxiety of my own Dad’s departure from the home. This all happened over quite a few years during which time, writing continued in small bits and pieces until one night at 3 A.M., I heard the whisper, ‘Get up and write this down!’ So I did and the angel story Lo & Behold flowed out from my pen! (It later became a children’s musical.) My spirit has been in tune with His Spirit in my dreams and Georgie, a Big Fish Tale followed, and later Put a Tiger in Your Tank. What started as a little girl ‘jotting down in a diary’ became an elderly lady becoming a Grandma Moses of print! My writing has continued to this day. These writings have all been focused on either the search for or the finding of relationship with my Heavenly
Father. During 12 years of lay preaching, Sister Sal Shares Seasonal Sermons was born and notes of encouragement to the Sanctuary Choir became Clef Notes. They have become ways to share with others about the joy of being found and getting the word out to others that God is real and God is love and can be found! As a Christian, I live in the upside-down Kingdom of Service, laying down my preferences in favor of others as an act of worship to the Lord. Let me be crucified with Christ so He can be seen in me! Life has been a great ride with my family of sons, their wives, grandchildren, their wives and grand kids. My sweet Ralph has gone to heaven now and my time has become a Bright/Sadness. I treasure every moment of our 65 years. And who knows? What stories still lie in wait for the whisper, Get up and Write this Down!? This article itself was given to me once again at 3 a.m. ! EC

of a problem, you have a better chance of tackling it. But other stress is not doing you any favours. It makes you feel uptight and anxious, and it doesn’t leave you alone. Of course, different people feel stressed in different situations. The most common causes of stress are: • work • tertiary studies • relationships • certain times, such as Christmas & holidays You may feel stress having an impact on your body (rapid heartbeat, sweating, faster breathing, difficulty with digestion) and your mind (negative thoughts such as ‘my blood is boiling’, ‘she is a pain in the neck’, ‘I hate this job’, ‘I’ve had enough’ or ‘I can’t believe what’s happening’). It might also be affecting your everyday life (perhaps you’re arguing more with your family, or you dread going to work). While each of us reacts to stress in different ways, it’s important to deal with any stress that is affecting your health and wellbeing. In other words, if you’re not bothered by long work hours, then that’s fine. But if a work overload is making you lose sleep, feel impatient with your family, or behave in other unwanted ways, then you need to make a change. STRESS CAN HURT YOUR BODY AND YOUR MIND Think about whether stress is hurting you: • Is stress affecting your physical health? Is it giving you tension headaches or migraines, messing up your digestion, or leading you to eat or drink more, or smoke? • Is stress affecting your mental health? Is it bringing on panic attacks, making you fearful, causing irritability, leading you to binge eat or starve yourself, making you struggle in relationships, or making you feel depressed? Here are more questions that may help you recognise stress: • Can you switch off when you want to rest? Or can you not stop thinking? • Are you coping? Or do little things get

It’s a natural response when you face a difficult or dangerous situation, or when you feel pressured to do or feel something. Stress is part of life, and it may even help you feel more alert or capable. But it can also feel overwhelming. In this case, your health, wellbeing, relationships, work and enjoyment of life can suffer. you down? • Do you feel mostly calm? Or do you feel irritable? • Can you enjoy other people’s company, and the things you have always found fun? Or do you feel like being alone more than usual? • Do you find you can read and work okay? Or is it hard to concentrate? • Do you feel well in yourself? Or do you have aches and pains that are not related to exercise or illness? • Are you eating and sleeping normally? Or do you find it harder to eat and sleep well? If your answers show you are stressed, then it’s time to come up with some stress busters! Remember, if you can learn to manage your stress, then you can avoid more serious illness. THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO MANAGE STRESS The best way to handle stress is different for each person. Look for your body’s warning signs, such as having a headache, grinding your teeth, clenching your jaw or feeling frustrated. And know your stress triggers, such as hunger, tiredness, arguments with your family or friends, certain times of day with your children, or deadlines. Then, work on de-stressing. The good news is that plenty of simple (and free) stress-busting techniques are available: • Establish regular times for when you eat, sleep, read, exercise, grocery shop and so on. And try to set up a routine for your household, so everyone knows what is happening and when. • Look after your health, with healthy food, regular exercise and calm times in your day. And avoid using alcohol and other drugs to get through your day.
worrying about a problem is worse than the actual problem. • Think about breaking a big problem into smaller ones. Look at different ways of tackling each problem, the possible consequences and your best options. In other words, work on your problem solving, and don’t wait for a sudden miraculous answer. • Write a to-do list. If a task or problem is on paper, then it doesn’t have to be in your head. • Hang out with people who care about you. Other people can remind you of your
• Be aware of thoughts that don’t help. Saying to yourself that you can’t cope, or don’t have enough time, or feel exhausted, for example, doesn’t help. Instead, try talking yourself through a tough situation: ‘I’m doing pretty well despite my fear’, ‘I can keep calm’, ‘Everything will be okay’. • Face whatever worries or scares you. If you don’t like job interviews, for example, try a practice interview with a friend. Or, if you know you’re having trouble paying your mortgage, speak with your bank manager. Sometimes,

to start dealing with your stress. Why not try some of these stress busters, for a fresh perspective? • Sweat out your stress with a high intensity workout. Or do the opposite: completely wind down in a tai chi class. • Spend time with someone who makes you laugh or has plenty of good stories that distract you. • Meditate, and learn to look at yourself with honesty and compassion rather than judgement and criticism. • Just stop. In other words, sit or lie on your own, and just breathe. • Grab some pencils and a colouring book. While you’re colouring in, you are slowing your thoughts and using your creativity. • Dance around the house to your favourite music. Or listen to music while you work. • Head outside for fresh air and a close encounter with the natural environment. Look up at the sky, watch for butterflies and lizards, and pick some flowers. • Visualise yourself somewhere that is idyllic to you, or with someone you love. Think about the sounds, smells and tastes of your perfect place. • Buy a plant. Simply being around plants is good for your relaxation. • Wiggle about. Starting with your feet and moving up to your face, try tightening and relaxing your muscles. • Tune out, or plug in. Turning off your screens and devices can help you switch off your thinking. On the flip side, watching a funny movie or talking to someone on Facetime can help you feel better too. • Eat a banana or a potato. These foods have potassium, which can improve your body’s energy and recovery. • Find a repetitive activity, such as knitting, wood carving or making jewellery. The simple act of repeating a skill with your hands can relieve stress. EC
own strengths, and listen when you need to ‘download’ your worries. • Be mindful of how you’re feeling, where you are, and who you’re with. Try to clear your head of thoughts about the past or future, and focus on being in the present. • Practise relaxing. You can try formal relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation, or just sit quietly in the park and let your body and mind settle. • Take time out every day to do something you enjoy (like reading a book, doing a puzzle or listening to music).
Just looking after yourself can also be a great way to tackle stress. A healthy body is a great first step to thinking clearly and feeling better: • Avoid drugs and alcohol. • Eat well and regularly. • Sleep enough to top up your energy. • Plan to exercise, and stick to the plan. • Breathe steadily. MAKE STRESS MANAGEMENT FUN! Sometimes, the same old approaches don’t seem enough, or don’t inspire you
