RITING THINGS DOWN has been in my blood since early childhood when my mother gave me a 5-year for 5 years too small for my thoughts so it became a 1-year diary, writing whole pages at a time. It became a way of therapy for me when my parents divorced and Dad left home. My search to find a ‘Father’ replacement which began on paper drove me to seeking a real-life relationship in other males in my life W diary. It gave me a chance to scribble a few lines, secrets and thoughts that I wanted to remember. Then came another 5-year diary and I found the five spaces
After a year in college, God brought the man of my dreams into my life and we married. During these early years of marriage, I continued to ‘jot down’ short writings, but my writing began in earnest in the 1960’s as I pounded out my life story In Search of Wholeness on an old Underwood upright typewriter. God added two sons to complete our family and it was a busy life, but underneath lay that anxiety of abandonment by my father. When Billy Graham came to Southern California, I found myself involved with prayer preparation for the crusade. I’d gone down the aisle of a Baptist Vacation Bible School in the
only to find that they all had ‘clay feet’. This evolved into searching for God as I attended a parochial school in my childhood. If I couldn’t have my earthly Dad, perhaps I could find my Heavenly Father! By the time high school came along, I was adept at ‘jotting down’ my thoughts and ideas so writing themes and essays and book reports came easy. English was my favorite subject and sharing my thoughts on paper continued to be a way of therapy for me. Little did I realize at the time that the words of an old hymn were very true in my life, Behind the dim unknown stands God watching over His own.
