A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER

KEY SCHOOL DATES

It has been lovely to welcome students back into school following the half term break. Although the days are getting shorter, that has not stopped us packing in as much as we can over the last couple of weeks. There have been a number of trips out of school which have included a trip to the theatre to see A view from the Bridge, a trip to the English National Opera and the Barbican, a trip to

Armistice Day - 11 November Diwali - 12 November

On Wednesday we launched our Parent Promise initiative and are extremely grateful to those parents who have already pledged their support. If you have not had a chance to do so please click here to view the information. This really will make a difference to every child’s experience in school. The annual PTA Christmas Tree sale is being held on Saturday 2 December, further details can be found at the end of the bulletin. We are also accepting donations of unwanted uniform for the Pre-loved Uniform Sale taking place at the same time. Please hand any donations into reception. Today after the Last Post was heard throughout school we marked Armistice Day with a minute’s silence. More than ever we all understand the value of peace as we see so many suffering from terrible conflicts around the world. This weekend also sees many in our school community celebrating Diwali, a festival celebrating the victory of good over evil. I hope that everyone finds a way to illuminate the darkness in the coming weeks.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Next week is Anti-Bullying Week and this year’s theme is ‘Make a Noise About Bullying’. The theme aims to highlight how important it is to speak out when we see or hear bullying going on and to encourage everyone to choose respect and unity, even when we disagree. The Anti-Bullying Alliance’s call to action states: Too often, we are silent when we see bullying take place, silent about the hurt bullying causes, and silent when we hear bullying dismissed as ‘just banter’. It doesn’t have to be this way. As a school we will be highlighting Anti-Bullying Week through tutor times, assemblies and PDC lessons. Parents can join us to ‘Make a Noise About Bullying’ by using this Anti-Bullying Week parent toolkit .

A MESSAGE FOR YEAR 8

It is a pleasure to welcome all of Year 8 back to school after the half term. We hope that you enjoyed a restful break period and have returned to school reinvigorated after the extended half term break.

Mrs Mortimer and Mr Sweeney ran a joint assembly in the first days back to fully introduce Mr Sweeney to the year group as he began the takeover process before Mrs Mortimer goes on maternity leave. Over the coming weeks the two of them will work together to support the year group before Mr Sweeney takes over at the end of November. The form group leading the way in this week’s housepoint chart is 8EFR with 86 points. 8POR are in second place with 79 points and 8FCO have taken third place with 74 points. House points can be used to ‘purchase’ items from the epraise rewards shop with gifts ranking from canteen passes to High Street store vouchers. This will not affect their totals however. Year 8 commemorated the forthcoming Remembrance Day with an assembly on Wednesday. Today a group of students played the Last Post live around the school, followed by the whole school observing a minute’s silence in respect for those that have fought in conflicts to defend our freedom and protect our way of life. It is not long now until the Waldegrave production of Annie hits the stage. We know that the Music and Drama department have been working tirelessly with the students involved, clocking up 84 hours of rehearsals so far, holding frequent after school sessions since May half term! A big well done to all students that are a part of this show - we cannot wait to see it.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Impossible Creatures - Katherine Rundell

If you enjoy Katherine Rundell’s The Wolf Wilder , then I highly recommend her newest book. A gripping fantasy novel, Rundell takes readers into the magical Archipelago, where mythical creatures exist but are under threat. Two children discover their hidden talents and their bravery is tested as they quest to save the source of the magic, on which all the creatures depend.
