Beloved Mother and Faithful Prayer Warrior How My Mother-in-Law Inspires Me and My Family Every Day

Many years ago, when Missy and I were boarding a plane to attend a law conference in San Francisco, Mimi and Pop Pop took us to the airport and even walked with us to the boarding gate (that was back in the day when anybody could walk up to the gate). As Mimi was waving us goodbye, she yelled happily in front of God and everybody in the very crowded boarding area, “You kids have fun and make lots of babies!” Everybody looked at us, and we all started laughing. I now know firsthand that if you want something good to happen in your life, just ask Mimi to pray for you. Then get ready to be blessed.

“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.’” Proverbs 31:28–29 Last year, in my monthly newsletter tribute to my wife, Missy, you might remember that I included this Bible verse because it perfectly describes how I feel about her. Well, the apple does not fall far from the family tree because it’s also true for my mother-in-law, Sue Stidham. Faith and family are the centers of her life. Sue — or Mimi as she is now called as the grandmother to eight grandchildren and two adopted grandchildren, David and Sarah — has the strongest faith I’ve ever known in a person. In the first 10 years of our marriage, Missy and I were trying to have children, and there were many moments we really worried it might not be possible. But Mimi knew in her heart that we’d have children. She never ever stopped praying for Missy and me, and she never lost faith that God would bless us with children. Not even once.

everybody in their family is now stepping up in their own individual way to help make Mimi and Pop Pop’s lives a little easier. Mimi’s family members are certainly modeling their behavior after the care and sacrifices she made for her parents. It’s really amazing to see that the apples are still not falling far from the family tree. Missy, Callie, and I are very thankful that we have Mimi praying for us, and I am thankful for the support she’s given me in all I do as a husband, father, and lawyer. I know that one day when Callie becomes a wife and mother, she will have two great role models in her life —Missy and Mimi. This Mother’s Day we may have to celebrate a bit differently. Yet, it will be the same as it has always been: Mimi and her family will be together.

Mimi also has the gift of caring for others, especially her family. When Mimi’s parents and mother-in-law were aging and needed daily, extensive care, Mimi cared for all of them in her home so they wouldn’t have to go to a nursing home. That takes a tremendous amount of strength, faith, and courage. I really respect her for that.

Happy Mother’s Day, Mimi!

Though Mimi and Pop Pop are getting older, they are still fairly independent. Yet,
