Former Corporate Finance Partner, John Gilligan’s book, Private Equity Demystified (4th Edition), co-written with MikeWright dispels some of the biggest myths and misconceptions about private equity. PRIVATE EQUITY DEMYSTIFIED: AN EXPLANATORY GUIDE

Published last November, the book provides a unique and authoritative source from a leading practitioner and academic for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers. The book explains in detail what private equity involves and reviews systematic evidence of what the impact of private equity has been.

John commented on the release:

When I left BDO I was 50 and I wanted to do something different with the second half of my career. After a year at LBS, I have been at Oxford University for the last three years as director of a course that trains the deal doers of tomorrow. It also gives me more time to write. I was lucky to work with the late, great Prof Mike Wright. We benefitted from the help and support of many people, including former colleagues at BDO in writing the book. In particular James Pratt and Adam Frais guided me through the tax maze as an author much as they did when I was a practitioner. This year, I am giving all the author royalties to The Big Issue where I am a trustee of the charitable arm, to support our emergency fund raising to support our vendors during COVID-19.

Written in a highly accessible style, the book takes the reader through what private equity means, the different factors involved, and issues concerning sourcing, checking out, valuing, and structuring deals and includes up-to-date discussion by the authors, informed commentators on the key issues in the lively debate about private equity.

John is currently the Director of the Oxford Said Finance Lab at Said Business School, University of Oxford, a visiting professor at Imperial College Business School, and a non-executive director of Big Issue Invest and a trustee of The Big Issue.
