TOWNHOUSE IN LISBON

This regal townhouse, known as Centenary Palacete, was constructed in 1901. It stands in a privileged location in the heart of Lisbon in Arroios, described by Time Out as “the coolest neighbourhood in the world”. The townhouse is in the middle of Rua Antero de Quental, anchored by the Italian embassy at one end and the former Desterro monastery/hospital at the other. Desterro is currently undergoing a “rebirth”, which, when finished, will open up new public spaces, restaurants, retail, offices and residential flats. The iconic Lisbon fish restaurant Ramiro sits in front of Desterro, and across the road, the 1908 Hotel has recently opened. The entrance to 1908 is on Largo do Intendente, which will soon add to its neighbours the first Soho House in Lisbon. The townhouse has undergone a two-year refurbishment program inside and out. It comprises four floors and 444 m² of usable internal space. There are three main entrances from the street, numbers 19, 23 and 27. Number 19 serves as the entrance to the mezzanine floor prepared as a self-contained apartment. The studio space accessible from number 23 historically has been used for retail/office accommodation. Following its renovation, diverse opportunities exist to use the ground floor studio as a gym, gallery or other workspace. For those needing car parking, this option is also available.

Number 27 provides access to the main house. The impressive entrance hall leads to the principal floor, which has been sensitively restored, retaining panelling, stucco work, marble and wood effect. There are eleven rooms on this floor, including the vestibule/study, drawing room, large dining room, two bedrooms, a dressing room and two bathrooms, kitchen and separate pantry and a garden room. Close attention has been paid to lighting, mixing modern with vintage. The furnishings also mix new with old, including pieces from iconic modern designers and antique Portuguese furniture acquired from the former owner whose family purchased the townhouse in 1903, two years after it was built. The second floor has undergone a total reconfiguration. It provides a secondary kitchen, two large bedrooms, three bathrooms and an area that can be used for living/dining or as a further large bedroom. This floor retains high ceilings and has five doors, which give access to small external terraces which could be expanded on the garden side if desired. Heating and cooling for the townhouse are supplied by discrete air- conditioning on the ground floor, mezzanine and second floor. Electric wall-mounted panel radiators provide heating on the first floor for the few weeks it may be needed. The “jewel in the crown” is undoubtedly the most beautiful private garden accessed from the principal floor extending to 115 m². This exterior space has also undergone extensive renovation. It incorporates a large terrace for outside dining and an upper level containing a Mediterranean garden with cypress trees, an ancient olive tree and raised planting with rosemary and lavender. A heated pool with an inground polycarbonate electric cover and jets for resistance swimming has been installed. A further area is set aside for lounging in the Lisbon sun.

The Entrance Hall and Staircase Lioz polished stone graces the entrance hall, harmonising with the original limestone steps. Farrow and Ball paints, used throughout the house, enhance the décor. An expansive brass lantern hangs overhead, while London Piccadilly lamps offer additional illumination on the half-landing and first-floor landing.

Vestibule/Study This finely adorned room features early 19th-century Portuguese side tables with marble tops and a light mahogany sofa table. Completing the room are two white leather Le Corbusier chairs.

Drawing Room One of the first-floor "Fine Rooms," this space features faithfully restored detailed stucco and plaster work, including gilt detailing, showcased beautifully in the evening by the Italian Sputnik ceiling light. Blue lamps by Ponto de Luz complement the Camaleonda sofas and coffee table by BB Italia. The room's sole artwork is part of Julian Opie's Landscape series, produced in 1988 and published by the Alan Cristea Gallery in London.

Dining Room Early 19th-century Portuguese furniture from the house's original owners infuses character into this space. Modern British paintings by Trevor Frankland, George Hooper, and Cornelia Parker adorn the walls. The room is brilliantly lit by a Cattellani and Smith ceiling light, with natural light filtering through an internal light well.

Garden Room This beautiful room, at its finest bathed in afternoon sun, is furnished with mid-century Italian furniture in mahogany and chrome, complemented by Murano wall and floor lights. Original Spaghetti chairs by Flyline offer additional seating. A mirror TV reflects the fine stucco work on walls and ceiling. Photographs taken in Moscow are by Hugo Madureira.

Kitchen Respecting the traditional Lisbon kitchen, lioz stone complements the existing chimney surround. Ceramic wall tiles mimic woven fabric. Glass furniture from Capod'opera in Italy and lights from Lodes add a touch of sophistication to this well-positioned room accommodating inside and outside dining.

Principal Bedroom Exquisite hand-painted, stencilled walls emulate damask fabric, setting the stage for a four-poster bed in gold leaf and side tables with Breach da Arrábida pink stone tops paired with mushroom lamps in white Murano glass.

Dressing Room Mirrored wardrobes reflect the splendid ceiling stucco work in the bedroom and dressing room. The adjacent bathroom is finished in white ceramic marble.

Pink Room This charming room overlooking the garden on the first floor combines wardrobes lacquered in Farrow and Ball Pink Ground with matching walls and wallpaper by Dsquared² from London Wallpaper. Pictures were acquired from the RA Summer Exhibition, while the lamp is a mid-century Braun.

Garden The garden takes inspiration from the courtyard landscaping at the Valverde Hotel in the Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon. Handmade 3D tiles from Portugal and furniture from Fermob create an inviting outdoor space. Mediterranean-themed planting, including cyprus, olive, lavender, rosemary, gardenia, and strelitzia alba, grace the garden. The heated pool, finished in light grey tiles from Marazzi, features a counter-current unit for resistance swimming and a massage spa jet. The house laundry room is next to the lower terrace, with a pool plant room above.

This newly built area houses a simple white kitchen with Corian countertops. A 19th-century buffet with a candle holder by Alvaro Siza and artwork by Trevor Frankland provide continuity with the floor below. Second Floor and Ancillary Kitchen

Lodes hanging ceiling lights and artwork by Trevor Frankland complete the room, which also features an en- suite bathroom.

Living Room This room, currently used as an office/living space, could also serve as an additional bedroom. It contains an en-suite bathroom and is furnished with a Togo sofa by Ligne Roset in red with a dining table lit overhead by a vintage Louis Paulsen pendant lamp. The desk, in grey faux leather, is from OKA, the desk chair is by Conran in brown leather, and the desk lamp is by Jake Dyson.

The room's furnishings include a bed from Vispring, a Berber rug purchased in Marrakesh, and mid- century black and red seating. The kitchen counter lighting is from Lode. The bathroom is finished with tiles from Marazzi, complementing a basin countertop in green marble. Art in this space is by Trevor Frankland.

Studio The two rooms and bathroom accessed from the street have multiple potential uses, with large green entrance doors providing a 2-meter clearance for garaging if required. Alternatively, the studio could accommodate another self-contained apartment, a retail space or a gallery.
