Mr Marriott began his career as a chemist but was always drawn to teaching and finally spent two years as a student teacher at East Oakleigh Central School. He walked three miles each way to school from his home in Mt. Waverley, through orchards. market gardens and dairy farms, with wild flowers growing on the track. From there he went to the Melbourne Teachers College to gain his teaching certificate, and was given his own rural school immediately. It was at Pound Creek, near Inverloch, and he says he was headmaster, sewing mistress and cleaner for eight pounds six shillings a fortnight, He had 12 students. Не was there for more than two years before joining the RAAF to become a radar mechanic. He was discharged in 1945. returned to teaching: and was given the school at Bulla where he remained for six years. He has been at Kananook for four years
