King's Business - 1922-10

.1001 ' In this Book there are no question marks. There are no “ ifs” and no “ peradventures” . It always speaks with positiveness and with authority. It says, “ Thus saith the Lord” about two thousand times. It demands of all men unqualified submission to its con tents, and it pronounces a curse upon those who would take away from its contents. When I read a book I do not want it full of interrogation points. The new Bible would be full of interrogation points. 3. We do not need a new Bible be cause it is the most universal book. Mr. Wells declared that we need a book of such universal make-up that it would cement all society together, and appeal to all races of men. Who could write a book that could do that as the old Bible does? In a lecture to the scholars of India on the Bible as “ The Universal Book” , Dr. John Henry Barrows said: “ In the last fifty years, the book which we rev erently name the Word of God has se cured admission into almost every part of the globe; has crossed the Rio Grande into Mexico, and the Orinoco and Ama- son Into the very heart of South America; has entered the gates of China, Japan and India, and has become a torch of light which is illuminating the Dark Continent. More than two hundred millions of copies, in all the great and most of the minor tongues of men, have told the story of Redemption the world around. . . . With this Book we shall come to all who linger in the twilight of Asia, and flash from these pages the Light of the World until, through the Universal Book, men shall see the Universal Man and Savior, and shall be brought into harmony with apostles, prophets, martyrs, who have kept the sayings of this Book, and now stand robed in white, before Him whom John saw with vesture dipped in blood,

THE K I N G ’ S B U S I NE S S 1. We do not need a new Bible be cause this old Book is the most prac tical book in the world. As Dr. Frank Crane suggests, “ It treats of the most interesting subjects, how to live and how to die. It restrains more crime than all the police. It solves more problems than all the philosophies. It promotes progress more than all re formers.” ' If you do not think that this old Bible is an up-to-date practical book, just begin to put it into practice. 2. We do not need^a new Bible, be cause the old Bible is the most authori tative book in the world. I have been reading some in Mr- W.’s volumes which he suggests as a sample of the new Bible that the world needs. One great advantage, he tells us, which a new Bible would have over the old is that it would teach not only by words but by pictures, and charts and maps wihich could not have been produced when the old Bible was written. He has some very plain charts in his "Outline of History” . But over these he has sprinkled question marks. On the chart of the Races of Mankind, twelve interrogation points are printed. The chart of languages contains four teen interrogation points. And all through the early chapters of his book the language of conjecture, rather than certainty, is to be found on nearly every .page. But turn to the Bible,— the old Bible! “ In the beginning God created the heav ens and the earth.” No conjecture about that. “ In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so I would have told you." “ Verily, verily, I say unto thee.” “ We speak that we do know and testify that we have seen.” There are no conjectures in the teach ings of the Living Word which find rec ord in the written Word.
