1002 . •whose name is called the Word of God. Where could you conceive of a hook more universal in its adaptation than this old ¿ible? It is like the message of the Gospel it contains, “ the power of God unto salvation unto every one that believeth,.to the Jew and also to the Greek.” 4. We need no new Bible because it is the most COMPREHENSIVE Book in the world. Mr. Wells seems to think that the principal defect of the old Bible is that it does not contain sufficient truth for the times in which we live; we have made such progress since the canon of Scripture was closed that the old Bible has not in it sufficient instruction for the needs of “ these great and danger ous days in which we are living.” But what would Mr. Wells have the new Bible to be? A book of rules of only present-day application? When the Koran was finished with its thou sands of “ rules” it was confidently thought that nothing would come up in the life of a Mohammedan that was not provided for in the new Bible they made, but before it got dry a dozen questions arose that the Koran could not answer. That isn’t the kind of a book the Bible is. It is not a book of rules which must constantly be changed, but is a book of PRINCIPLES that are of permanent ap plication. 5. We need no new Bible because It is the most perennial book ever written. Prof. Jas. Orr once said: "What im presses me most, in reading the Bible is the consciousness of God; that though the words were written over two thou sand years ago, they are spoken to me with a freshness each day; they are ever new. It is this deep, vivid con sciousness of God that distinguishes the Bible from all other books. It is the only book I have ever read that I am conscious that the words are not

THE K I N G ' S B U S I NE S S the thoughts of men.” The one who reads the Bible most loves it the best, and feels that there is a freshness about. it that cannot be found in any other book that is read and re-read. 6. There is no need of a new Bible because it is the most powerful. No other book has survived such op position as has been directed against the Bible. It has been the most hated as well as the best loved book in the world. For two thousand years it has been subjected to every conceivable attack. “ Did you ever watch the swelling tide rush upon the giant rocli ? It was only for a little while, and then the waters rolled back and the rock remained un hurt. So stands the Bible against all. the assaults which are made upon it. and being the Word of God, it will stand forever.” But this old Bible has not only resist ing power; its has. transforming power. “ The Word of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” What could a new Bible of a commit tee’s composition do in the sphere of moral and religious life? Does Mr. Wells think that we need nothing more than a modern cosmogony, and some rules of health and of political ajnd moral relationships? Would such a Bible satisfy-the crav ing of man’s immortal, nature? No, thank you, we do not need your new Bible. We will keep the old Bible a while longer. For “ The grass withereth, the flower fadeth, but the Word of our God shall stand forever.? ■ .-y mm They said to a humble Christian sister, rich toward God: “Are you the woman with- the great faith?” “Oh, no,” said she ;•“I am the woman with a little faith in the great God.” .
