Spirit began to work in Mr. Yang’s heart; a great terror came upon him. The writer of the account says: “ Truly it was like the experience of Paul when God called him. For three days and nights Mr. Yang neither ate nor drank anything. He had a vision of a man of dark countenance standing over him with a drawn sword. 5 In fear- he fled to the street and coming near to the evan gelistic band’s headquarters he stood there for a long, long time. Then one of our evangelists came along and as soon as he saw him he prostrated him self before him. The evangelist quickly picked him up, asked who he was and what he wanted, then took him inside to meet the leader, Mr. Tien. When he saw Mr. Tien he again prostrated him self, and again was quickly raised up and given a chair. We explained the Gospel to him, and urged him. to turn from the false to the true. Over and over we told him the story, but he was unwilling to open his mouth and con fess his error. We saw, however, that he was really at heart a sincere man, and that he was afraid to return to his temple, so we kept him with us for our evening service and then escorted him back to his temple." The next morning as our men wqre starting out for the day they met Mr. Yang coming toward them. He said: “ I have come-to see that your religion is really not a ‘Foreign religion,’ but is just like ours and I have decided to believe it. On arrival there he at last began to argue with them, but nothing they could say seemed to be able to clear away the awful delusions of his mind. At last they asked him to tell them the

YANG TSUNG TAO, Converted Priest He learned that, as is so common, his religion was a mixture of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. His delu sion was so extreme that its darkness seemed too deep to be penetrated, the chains of superstition that hound him too strong to be broken. He listened in a listless kind of way to what Mr. Chen had to say, but scarcely made a reply. The cold unresponsiveness of his face was most pitiable and filled Mr. Chen’s heart with sorrow. And yet this man had a soul, but apart from a mani festation of the mighty power of God the case seemed utterly hopeless. Mr. Chen gave him some Gospel books, prayed that the Holy Spirit might lead him into the light, and then left him with God and His Word while he him self went back to the band headquarters to plead with God that light might come into that poor dark heart. When the Holy Spirit Works After Mr. Chen left him the Holy
