—Morgan. Subject unto them. The mar­ vel of this condescension lies in its coming after such a scene and such an assertion of His higher Sonship.— Brown. v. 52. Jesus increased. The incar­ nation vyas a true acceptance of human­ ity with all its sinless limitations of growth and development. His school­ ing 'was probably that of the ordinary Jewish child. He could read (Lk. 4:17) and write (Jn. 8:6-8). He wrought at the carpenter’s bench (Mk. 6 :3). His gentleness and grace of character en­ deared Him to all who knew Him. No stain of sin clouded His vision of divine things. His after history shows that His mind was nourished on the Scrip­ tures, nor, as He pondered them, could His soul remain unvisited by thé knowl­ edge that He was the One in whom their predictions were to be realized. Int. Bible Eucy. The life of Jesus was a de­ velopment from Bethlehem to Olivet. He was perfection to begin with, yet “He was made perfect.” . This implies increase of gifts and graces. His human nature came gradually to all the various kinds of knowledge, includ­ ing that of Himself and His mission. We are not told when He first came to the consciousness that He was the Mes­ siah, and where Scripture is silent it is useless to conjecture.— Farr. I ¡8 j 5W The Boy Jesus. Luke 2:40-52. Memory Verse.— “ And the child grew, and waxed strong, filled with wisdom.” Luke 2:40. Approach.— Boys and girls, do you think there are any people in the world who do not like children? Let us never suppose that we are in the company of Jesus when in fact we may have lost Him. Never rest until you and He have found each other.—Meyer. Here was the revelation of a self-con­ sciousness that Mary might have been prepared for in Jesiis, but perhaps in the common intercourse of life was tending to lose sight of. The lesson was not unneeded, yet once it had been given, Jesus went back with them to Nazareth and was subject unto them.— Orr. My Father’s business. The first recorded words of the Lord. The refer­ ence is to Ps. 40:5-11; (Jn 4:34), hence the divine necessity. The last recorded words as the Son of man, were, “ It is finished*’—r-the Father’s business which He. came to be- about-— Comp. Bible. The Son of God, charged with the great­ est business ever given any human be­ ing, was for eighteen years at work in a carpenter shop.— Sel. The business on which He entered at twelve, was not preaching, working miracles and going about doing good in public man­ ner, but for the time remaining at home, a dutiful child, a glad, helpful youth, an industrious growing man.— Miller. v. 51. Went down to Nazareth. It is not given to all to serve in public places. The great majority must live their lives outside any prominent sphere and as part of a very small circle of relatives, and acquaintances. Jesus was for eighteen years a carpenter who pleased God. At His baptism God lit up all the years at Nazareth with the sweet words of approval: “My be­ loved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
