Why ‘Sculptural’ Candles Are Selling Out

Research from the National Candle Association (NCA) backs this up. According to their website, in the ‘80s, “interest in candles as decorative items, mood-setters, and gifts began to increase notably. Candles were suddenly available in a broad array of sizes, shapes, and colors, and consumer interest in scented candles began to escalate.” Today, they’re back in style! Second, candles are the latest way to enhance the artistry of homes. According to Better Homes & Gardens, searches for sculptural candles first spiked in 2020 when COVID-19 trapped us all inside. In our quest to add art and coziness to our lives, we turned to fun candles — and now, we’re pushing the envelope with weirder and wilder designs. Ultimately, the reason behind the trend doesn’t matter. If you love it, hop on board! Just be sure to shop smart. Instead of buying paraffin candles made from the byproducts of petroleum — which are linked to pollution and can trigger asthma — look for soy, beeswax, or stearin candles instead. Before buying from major retailers, you should check out local shops and small candle makers like those on Etsy.com. You’ll be trendy, eco‑friendly, and supporting small businesses!

PEOPLE ARE GOING NUTS FOR ‘SCULPTURAL’ CANDLES The Dos and Don’ts of Joining the Trend

Haven’t you heard? Candlesticks aren’t just dull Thanksgiving accessories anymore! In 2023, plain tapers are out, and sculptural candles are in. These come in hundreds of shapes and sizes, from column-like candlesticks to lamps, vases, and body parts. If you doubt us, just Google it. As we write this, FWRD is selling a ribbed, S-shaped green candle for $150 and a hand-shaped candle making a peace sign for $40.

Why are sculptural candles all the rage right now? We have a few theories. First, the ‘70s and ‘80s are trending, and many of the sculptural candles selling out online are tagged “70s,” “vintage,” or “mid-century modern.” It’s possible sculptural candles are just the latest manifestation of a throwback trend sweeping everything from furniture to color palettes.
